Hiding the Ribbon

Double-click the active tab to hide the Ribbon, and then double-click tab to redisplay it. CTRL+F; minimize the Ribbon.

Word

Word processing software is used with text to create, edit, and format documents such as letters, memos, reports, brochures, resumes, and flyers.

Backstage view

You can print, save, open, close, and share a file. Displays when you click the File tab. It includes commands related to common file activities and provides information on an open file.

Contextual tab

a Ribbon tab that displays when an object, such as a picture or clip art, is selected. A contextual tab contains groups and commands specific to the selected objects.

command

a button or area within a group that you click to perform tasks.

User Interface

a collective of onscreen components that facilitates communication between the software and the user.

File Tab

a darker shade then the other tabs, and a different color depending on the application. Clicking the File tab opens the Backstage view.

Template

a predesigned file that you can modify to suit your needs. Example of template list.

Microsoft Office

a productivity software suite that includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software components.

Gallery

a set of selections that appears when you click a More button, or in some cases when you click a command, in a Ribbon group. Choice of Excel chart styles and Power Point transition. Themes gallery.

group

a subset of a tab that organizes similar tasks together.

Dialog box

a window that enables you to make selections or indicate settings beyond those provided on the Ribbon. provides access to more precise, but less frequently used, commands.

View button

allow you to switch to different view of the presentation.

Live Preview

an Office feature that provides a preview of the results of a selection when you point to an option in a list. Using Live Preview, you can experiment with settings before making a final choice.

Dialog Box Launcher

an icon in Ribbon groups that you can click to open a related dialog box. It is not found in all groups.

Title Bar

contains the current file name, Office application, and control buttons -- enable you to minimize, maximize, restore down, or close the application window.

Tab

designed to appear much like a tab on a file folder, with the active tab highlighted. On the Ribbon contains groups of related tasks.

Enhanced Screen Top

displays, giving the purpose of the command, short descriptive text, and a keyboard shortcut if applicable. provides a brief summary of a command when you place the mouse pointer over the command button.

Zoom Slider

enables you to increase or decrease the size of file contents onscreen.

Key Tip

the letter or number that displays over features on the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar. Typing the letter or number is the equivalent of clicking the corresponding item.

Ribbon

the long bar of tabs, groups, and commands located just beneath the Title bar. Other tabs on the Ribbon enable you to create and modify a file.
