Insertion point

(known also as the Cursor) A blinking vertical bar on the screen that marks the location at which text will appear when you type.

Paging Arrows

Double-arrow buttons in the bottom right-hand corner of the Word window that allows you to scroll to the next (or previous) page.

Numeric Keypad.

These are the number keys located to the right of the Special and Arrow keys. It can be two different keypads, depending on the NUM LOCK key. If you toggle the NUM LOCK on, the keypad becomes a 10-key calculator. If the toggle is off, you may use the numeric keypad to control the cursor—just like the arrow keys.

These are the settings already established and set on a computer at the time of installation.

Function Keys

These keys are located at the top of the keyboard and are used to enter specific commands. Examples are: F1 will bring up the Office Assistant window. F7 is a command for the Spelling and Grammar check. The [Esc] key in the upper-left corner is used to cancel commands or actions.

ToolTip:

A brief description that is displayed when the pointer is positioned over a taskbar or toolbar button. It identifies what that button is.

Scroll box

A rectangular section in a scroll bar that can be dragged to scroll to a specific location in a document.

Windows Button & Tab

Allows you to scroll through all open Windows. Let go when the Window you want is in front.

Word wrap

An automatic function that continues a typed text to the next line without pressing [Enter]. When word wrapping a paragraph, the paragraph is linked together.

Scroll arrows

Arrow buttons at both ends of a scroll bar. The arrow indicates the direction the document moves when scrolled. Use scroll arrows to move in small increments through a document. Hold the left mouse button down to scroll quickly.

If you select text and then hold the left mouse button down, you are able to drag text to a new location. If you select text, hold the right mouse button down, and move the text to a new location, you will be given the following options: Move here, Copy here, Link here, or Cancel.

Spelling and Grammar check.

Desktop

The name given to the object that fills the entire computer screen and contains the icons, folders, windows, etc. to be used in that particular software.

Typewriter or Standard Keyboard.

The computer keyboard is set up like any other typewriter keyboard has been set up for many years. There is, however, the addition of [CTRL] keys and [ALT] keys on either side of the space bar. These keys are used in combination with others to perform special functions

Delete

The key takes out (deletes) everything to the right of the cursor.

arrow keys

These keys are located to the right of the standard keyboard and below the special keys. There are four arrow keys. Use these keys to control the position of the cursor on the screen. You may move up or down one line at a time, or you may move to the left or to the right one space at a time. If you press Ctrl + the left or right arrow, you can move across the line one word at a time.

Special Keys

These keys are located to the right of the typewriter keyboard. are the insert, home, page up, delete, end, and page down keys.

Insert

This key allows text, numbers, or symbols to be inserted into a document. It is inserted at the point where the cursor is blinking. Use this key to take off the OVR or overwrite feature.

Windows button

This key is located between the Ctrl key and the Alt key. The Windows button will open the Start Menu. This is particularly helpful if the mouse is inactive.

Home

This key moves the cursor to the beginning of a line.

end

This key moves the cursor to the end of a line.

Page Down

This key moves your screen down one screen at a time.

page up

This key quickly scrolls you within a document. As you press the page up key, it will more your screen up one screen at a time.

CTRL End

This moves the cursor to the end of the document.

CTRL Home

This moves the cursor to the top of a document.

Esc key

To cancel commands or actions.

Shift F3

To change the case of letters.

Snap

To drag a window to the left- or right-hand side of your screen in order to better view or compare documents side-by-side.

Shift Enter

To force Word to Single Space.

F1

To get help from the Office Assistant.

Ctrl [ ]

To increase/decrease font size. It will increase one point at a time.

Scroll

To move vertically or horizontally in a window so you can view information that is not currently visible.

F12

To open the Save As window

To open the Thesaurus

Pinning

To place an icon for favorite programs onto the taskbar. To do this, just hover over the program and drag it to the taskbar, or right click and select "Pin to Task bar."

Alt F4

To quit Word. Be careful—this will close Word.

To repeat the last action. Acts like a copy and paste.

Scroll bars

Vertical and horizontal areas near the right and bottom borders of a window that contain more information than can be displayed. You can scroll through a document in large increments by clicking the scroll arrows, dragging the scroll box, or clicking the scroll bar.

a bar at the bottom of the word window that indicates where the cursor is currently located, how many pages and words are in the documents, etc
