Know and understand the "Analysis Elements of a Movie."

(TMOV CD CD) Theme - One way you can analyze a movie is by stating the major theme of the movie and how that theme is displayed in the movie. Theme is a central unifying idea in a story. Origination - One way to analyze a movie is to find out (or speculate with sources) about the origin of the movie. Is the movie based on real historical events? Why did the writer decide to create the movie? Is the movie based on a book? One might decide to examine the movie's relationship to its broader cultural, historical, or theoretical context. As we have learned within the previous short stories, whether the author intended to or not, works of art of any form are the product of the current culture or period in which they were created. Directing - If you're a movie buff and are interested more in what is going on BEHIND the scenes, this viewpoint may be more intriguing to you. What is a movie director? Links to an external site. Musical Elements - If you love music, the music that is included in some movies may be of interest to you. Some movies rely on music to enhance the storyline. What musical elements are included in the movie, and how do they affect the overall story or plot? Visual Elements - Are there special visual elements that are used in the movie that make it unique? Camera Movement - Some movies are unique because of the different camera movement. Think The Blair Witch Project here. Dissect an actor - Actors consider themselves to be artists that have honed a craft. Select a main character in the movie and critique the acting job he or she did. Some scenes can be good, and some can be bad. Critique a filmmaker - You may like a series of movies, such as Marvel or Star Wars. In this situation, you might elect to critique a filmmaker in relation to the series of movies.

Principles for Avoiding Plagiarism

1. Acknowledge borrowed material within the text by introducing it with the name of the author or source from which it was taken. 2. Use quotation marks to enclose all phrases and passages quoted directly. 3. Make certain that summarized or paraphrased material is written in your own words, sentence patterns, and style. Simply rearranging sentences from a source is unacceptable. 4. Document each borrowed item as it occurs. 5. Provide a bibliography entry for every book, magazine, or resource that you use in your project.

List and describe 3 differences in formatting between an MLA and an APA formatted essay.

APA: The title of reference is called "References", which is at the end of the essay. The sources are listed alphabetically by author's last name. Each entry has the author's name, publication year, source title, publication information, and sometimes a DOl or URL. In-text citation: (Author's last name, publication year, p. page number); Example: (Smith, 2019, p.7). APA requires a title page with a running head, page number, the title of the essay, your name, and school name. MLA: The title of reference is called "Works Cited", which is at the end of the essay. The sources are listed alphabetically by author's last name. Each entry has the author's name, publication year, source title, publication information, and type of publication. No title page is required. Instead of a title page, you would put your name, instructor's name, course title, and date in the upper left corner of the first page with the essay title centered right below it. In-text citation: (Author's last name and page number); Example: (Smith 7).

What is the definition of plagiarism according to the ICC Academic Policy?

According to the ICC Academic Policy, "plagiarism is the representation of previously written, published or creative work as one's own." I think plagiarism means using or claiming someone else's work as your own without giving them proper credit for their work.

Know what a thesis statement is, where it should be placed, and what its purpose is.

An analysis thesis should answer these questions: What is the writer doing? How does he/she do it? What is the effect? The purpose of the thesis statement is to tell readers what the whole argument about the essay is going to be about. This is not a fact or anything from your sources because the thesis must come from your own head.

Explain what analysis means and how we have analyzed so far this semester.

Analysis means examining and breaking down something to get a better understanding. In the literary analysis, we had to break down each point into claim evidence and interpretation. After we get the evidence to back up our claim then we can interpret the evidence so that the reader knows what has been analyzed. We also examined the visual analysis of some type of visual, such as art or video. The process for that is very similar to what I have used for the previous assignments.

Know what makes a source "credible." What one website is generally not considered credible but is widely known and referenced in general life? Why is it not credible and usable?

If the source is NOT Peer reviewed, then it is not credible and usable. What makes the source credible is that it has been peer reviewed, so it is credible. Wikipedia is not a credible website because it has an open editing option where anyone can edit it and change the information to anything. It also lacks peer review so it can have an inaccurate information.

Define imagery and give one example in one of the two short stories that were assigned in Module 2.

Imagery is a literary element that allows us to use our five senses to hear, smell, taste, and touch to better understand the story. The short story titled "The Yellow Wallpaper" written by Charoltte Perkins Stetson uses imagery to portray the narrator's mental state and harsh environment. For example, the yellow wallpaper in the room causes her to become obsessed with it, as she sees distrubing shapes and patterns, which eventually leads her to believe that a woman is trapped behind the wall.

Is it ever acceptable to quote, paraphrase, or summarize information found from a source without giving credit (including citations) for that source? Explain your answer.

No, quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing information without giving credit for that source is still considered plagiarism. You always need to include citations for a source if you are going to use it.

Revising Stage 3: Editing Up Close

Once you have completed your revision and feel confident in your content, it's time to begin the editing stage of your revision and editing process. The following questions will guide you through your editing: Are there any grammar errors, i.e. have you been consistent in your use of tense, do your pronouns agree? Have you accurately and effectively used punctuation? Do you rely on strong verbs and nouns and maintain a good balance with adjectives and adverbs, using them to enhance descriptions but ensuring clear sentences? Are your words as accurate as possible? Do you define any technical or unusual terms you use? Are there extra words or clichés in your sentences that you can delete? Do you vary your sentence structure? Have you accurately presented facts; have you copied quotations precisely? If you're writing an academic essay, have you tried to be objective in your evidence and tone? If writing a personal essay, is the narrative voice lively and interesting? Have you spellchecked your paper? If you used sources, have you consistently documented all of the sources' ideas and information using a standard documentation style?

Explain one "lesson" or "warning" Shirley Jackson might be communicating through her short story "The Lottery." Write a good paragraph of at least 4 sentences to explain your reasoning. Use general references in the story to support your ideas. (Direct quotes are not required. General references are acceptable.)

One warning that the author portrays through the story is about the dangers of the ritual lottery. The author expresses how the villagers still follow the ritual. Mrs. Hutchinson unfortunately selects the lottery with the black dot. The black dot means that Mrs. Hutchinson is the lottery winner and that she has to die due to the ritual meaning. The author is trying to tell the readers that we should not follow this ritual. Shirley Jackson gives to the readers is about the dangers of following tradition or societal norms without any hesitation or understanding the underlying consequence behind it. Jackson highlights how danger can be lurking even in an ordinary town where people gather to pick a lottery. Unfortunately, by selecting the card with the black dot, Tessie Hutchinson becomes the unlucky lottery winner who has to die due to the lack of moral reasoning. In fact, Jackson is seemingly criticizing the traditional ritual that these people are following.

Concerning Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when writers falsely represent the words and ideas of others as their own, either intentionally or unintentionally. Because academic scholarship demands honesty, we consider plagiarism a very serious offense—it is absolutely unacceptable in academic writing. Any student found guilty of flagrant plagiarism on themes of any kind will receive a failing grade on the theme in question and will risk failing the entire semester.

Know the 3 Stages of Revision (See M E)

Revising Stage 1: Seeing the Big Picture Revising Stage 2: Mid-View Revising Stage 3: Editing Up Close

Example of Proper Use of Sources

Source material (taken from Walter Allen's The English Novel, p. 223) Wuthering Heightsis the most remarkable novel in English. It is perfect in the rarest way: it is the complete bodying forth of an intensely individual apprehension of the nature of man and life. That is to say, the content is strange enough, indeed baffling enough, while the artistic expression of it is flawless.

Example of Improper Use of Sources

Student Version A (Unacceptable) The most remarkable novel in English is Wuthering Heights. It brings forth an individual apprehension of the nature of man and life: therefore, it is perfect in the rarest way. The artistic expression is flawless, but the content is strange, indeed baffling. Look for quotation marks. Are there any? No. Is there any exact language form the original source? Yes! Is there an in-text citation? No. This piece of writing is plagiarism in its most deplorable form. The student has simply reversed the order of each sentence, retaining most of the original phrasing. By failing to use quotation marks appropriately and by neglecting to identify his source, this writer implies that the words and ideas in this passage are entirely his own—a flagrant example of intellectual theft.

Example of Improper Use of Sources

Student Version B (Unacceptable) Wuthering Heights is a great English novel. It is perfect in the rarest way: it provides an individual apprehension of man's nature. The artistic expression is flawless, although the content is strange and baffling (Allen 223). Look for quotation marks. Are there any? No. Is there any exact language form the original source? Yes! Is there an in-text citation? Yes. Even though this student has documented the source, she has still plagiarized. The absence of quotation marks implies that the phrasing and sentence patterns of this passage are entirely her own, but despite some simple omissions and word changes, they are not. The result, unfortunately, is neither a direct quotation nor an accurate paraphrase nor an efficient summary. Though not as flagrantly plagiarized as Version A, this treatment of the source is also unacceptable in academic writing and still counts as plagiarism.

Example of Proper Use of Sources

Student Version C (Acceptable) Walter Allen insists that Wuthering Heightsis artistically "flawless." While admitting that the story is "strange enough, indeed baffling enough," he argues that the novel is "perfect" because it accurately presents "an intensely individual apprehension of the nature of man and life" (223). Look for quotation marks. Are there any? Yes!. Is there any exact language form the original source? Yes! Is there an in-text citation? Yes!. This version illustrates the appropriate use of source material. Student C introduces the passage containing borrowed material by identifying the authority cited, accurately presents the substance of the source's comment in her own words and sentence patterns, and uses quotation marks to set off strikingly worded phrases copied directly from the source so as to give full credit where credit is due. This student thus deals honestly with both her source and her readers.

Submitting work that is not the student's own, including papers, assignments or exams. • Supplying or receiving in any way unauthorized information for the preparation of a test, exam or assignment. • Communicating during a test/exam with the intent of copying from or supplying information to another student. • Taking an exam with the aid of cheat sheets, notes or other unauthorized assistance. • Improperly using technology including copying or receiving information from others, accessing computer files without authority and altering records, or copying answers obtained from an educational app. • Assisting any person committing an act of academic dishonesty. • Violation of testing or assessment procedures as stated in the course syllabus

Define symbolism and give one example in one of the two short stories that were assigned in Module 2.

Symbols are often "objects, people, places, and actions that represent qualities, attitudes, beliefs, and values". The short story titled "The Yellow Wallpaper" written by Charoltte Perkins Stetson uses symbolism to show that the garden outside of the room represents freedom. The narrator yearns to be at the garden, which is the exact opposite of her room where everything is confined and controlled.

Why are electronic databases especially useful to students when searching for sources to use in an essay? The information is provided online and is comprehensive like Wikipedia. The information can be very easy to find. The information is factual and reliable. Students can press the Easy Button and get the source information delivered to them through Amazon Prime.

The information is factual and reliable.

Name the two major characters in the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" and briefly explain the role each person plays in the story.

The narrator is a female that has a health condition that confines her from moving a lot to prevent exhaustion. This causes her to stay in the yellow wallpaper room located upstairs. She plays the role of portraying mental madness as her mental state deteriorates. She talks about how the yellow wallpaper disturbs her and describes that she sees a woman in the yellow wallpaper. The narrator's husband John is a physician that took care of the narrator's health condition by keeping her in the upstairs room with the yellow wallpaper. His role is to show the traditional head of household role and how that contributes to worsening the narrator's mental state.

Revising Stage 2: Mid-View

The second stage of the revision process requires that you look at your content closely and at the paragraph level. It's now time to examine each paragraph, on its own, to see where you might need to revise. The following questions will guide you through the mid-view revision stage: Does each paragraph contain solid, specific information, vivid description, or examples that illustrate the point you are making in the paragraph? Are there are other facts, quotations, examples, or descriptions to add that can more clearly illustrate or provide evidence for the points you are making? Are there sentences, words, descriptions or information that you can delete because they don't add to the points you are making or may confuse the reader? Are the paragraphs in the right order? Are your paragraphs overly long? Does each paragraph explore one main idea? Do you use clear transitions so the reader can follow your thinking? Are any paragraphs or parts of paragraphs redundant and need to be deleted?

Briefly describe the setting in the short story "The Lottery." Why is the setting significant in this short story? Write a good paragraph of at least 4 sentences to explain your reasoning. Use general references in the story to support your ideas. (Direct quotes are not required. General references are acceptable.)

The setting is in a small village where there are about 300 people. The village people gather to have a ritual lottery. However, the setting of the story quickly changes as the story goes further on. The setting seems to be normal, but in the actual story it is abnormal because a death happens.

This element will always have content. Use title-style capitalization for the title and subtitle (if there is one). See Formatting Titles for more information. There should be a colon between the title and subtitle. If there isn't one, add one. If the work is a standalone work (e.g. a book, a movie) or a container for another work (e.g. a website, a journal, a newspaper, etc.), italicize the title. If the work is a shorter work or contained within another container (e.g. an article in a journal, a page on a website, an episode within a series, a song on an album, a poem within a book, etc.) put the title within quotation marks. If there is no title, add a description in place of the title. The description should be in sentence case. It should not be italicized or contained within quotes. End the title element with a period.

Common Varieties of Plagiarism

Using another's exact words, whether phrases or complete sentences, without correctly setting them off with quotation marks. Do not, under any circumstances copy information from a source directly into your paper without providing appropriate quotation marks and crediting the source. Also included in this category is the mere rearrangement of source material into a new pattern. Borrowing, summarizing, or paraphrasing another's ideas or sentence patterns without properly identifying their source. Always document the source of borrowed material, even if you are restating it in your own words. When restating, reorganize the sentence patterns as well. Presenting another student's work as your own. Never hand in as your own paper produced either partially or entirely by someone else.

What makes a source credible or not credible? What is one example of a widely known website that is NOT considered credible? Why is it not credible? Be sure to answer each question for full credit.

What makes the source credible is the peer review. In order to be credible, it has to have accurate and reliable information that is backed up by evidence. The non credible source is not peer reviewed, so it is not credible and usable. Wikipedia is not a credible website because it has an open editing option where anyone can edit it and change the information to anything. It lacks peer review so it can have an inaccurate and bias information.

Revising Stage 1: Seeing the Big Picture

When you first begin your revision process, you should focus on the big picture or issues at the essay level that might need to be addressed. The following questions will guide you: Do you have a clear thesis? Do you know what idea or perspective you want your reader to understand upon reading your essay? Is your essay well organized? Is each paragraph a building block in your essay: does each explain or support your thesis? Does it need a different shape? Do parts need to be moved? Do you fully explain and illustrate the main ideas of your paper? Does your introduction grab the reader's interest? Does your conclusion leave the reader understanding your point of view? Are you saying in your essay what you want to say? What is the strength of your paper? What is its weakness?
