Mitosis and Cell Cycle Notes
1st stage of cell division
interphase
What happens during telophase?
- (t)wo nuclei form - chromosomes appear as chromatin (threads rather than rods) - mitosis ends
What happens during cytokinesis?
- cell membrane moves inward to create two daughter cells -- each with its own nucleus with identical chromosomes during the last stage there are 2 different cells (c)ytokinesis = (c)ytoplasm divides in town
What happens during metaphase?
- chromatids (pairs of chromosomes) attach to the spindle fibers --- and line up in the middle of the cell the nucleus is gone so there is no room to move
What happens during anaphase?
- chromatids separate and begin to move to opposite ends of the cell (a)naphase = chromatids move (a)part
What happens during interphase?
- chromosomes are copied - chromosomes appear as threadlike coils (like pasta) at the beginning, but each chromosome and its copy (sister) change to sister chromatids at the end of this phase.
Be able to label the stages of the cell cycle.
-interphase -prophase -metaphase -anaphase -telephase -cytokinesis
I Pray More At The Church I Party More At The Club
-interphase -prophase -metaphase -anaphase -telephase -cytokinesis
______ organisms use mitosis to grow and repair themselves.
All
What happens during prophase?
PRO = first (step) - mitosis begins (cells divide) - centrioles appear and begin to move to opposite ends of cell - spindle fibers form between the poles - DNA condenses into chromosomes (X)
______ organisms use mitosis to reproduce asexually (no sperm or egg, only one parent)
Some
What is mitosis?
The process in which cells divide to make new cells.
What is the cell cycle?
The series of events that takes place in a cell leading to its division.
cell division
all cells go through this process
4th stage of cell division
anaphase
When bacteria reproduce, it is asexual or sexual reproduction?
asexual reproduction
6th stage of cell division
cytokinesis
3rd stage of cell division
metaphase (m)etaphase (middle)
2nd stage of cell division
prophase
5th stage of cell division
telophase
How do bacteria reproduce?
using mitosis
