Module 11 Exercise: Global Climate and Climate Change
Assess the accuracy and understanding of weather and climate by our President.
*Your own response*: Tips- Weather is temporary and global warming hasn't gone away.
Climate policy is going to be a hot topic for many years to come. If you were an advisor to President Trump, how would you advise him to proceed with the United States Climate Change policy? Should the US re-enter the Paris Climate accord? Should the US enter into agreements with other nations to limit carbon dioxide emissions? How should restrictions on emissions be accomplished? Should cuts be mandatory or voluntary?
*Your own response*: tips- America should reenter the Paris Climate accord to limit CO2. The way to limit greenhouse gases would be limiting coal, deforestation, natural gas, and petroleum.
Match the following terms related to weather and climate.
-Weather: the short-term condition of the atmosphere in a given location -Climate: the long-term average condition of the atmosphere for a location -Climate Change: a change in global or regional climate patterns -Global Warming: a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere
Rising sea levels of the ocean are going to be a result of ________________ (choose all that apply).
-the melting of glaciers and ice sheets on land masses -thermal expansion
According to the video, what is the magic number of degree change that humanity hopes to obtain to maintain a threshold of a liveable climate? 0
2C
Provided below is a map of an imaginary continent on an imaginary Earth-like planet. This planet has all of the exact same characteristics of Earth (tilt, rotation, currents, wind patterns, etc..) On a yearly basis, which of these locations would experience what would be considered a "tropical climate"?
A
On a yearly basis, which of these would be considered to have a "wet" climate? (choose all that apply)

A-Tropical B-Dry C-Temperate D-Continental E-Polar
The melting of the __________________ ice sheet will have a greater effect on rising sea levels as they will contribute water to the ocean basins as these ice sheets are located in landmasses.
Antarctic & Greenland
Which letter of the Koppen Classification System primarily relies on precipitation amounts and not temperatures.
B
The first letter of Florida's climate classification would be a ______ classification.
C
Which of these locations is located in a "rainshadow"? (choose all that apply)

The atmospheric gas that scientists believe is responsible for the current warming trend is _______________.
Carbon Dioxide
The climatograph above is for Orlando, Florida. Based on this climatography, the climate classification of Orlando is _________.
Cfa
The largest contributor to the global carbon budget is
China
The change in ocean temperatures and acidity result in corals expelling their zooanthallae creating a condition known as _________________.
Coral Bleaching
When comparing all of the natural causes of climate change to the current global temperatures, there is a direct correlation between these events and the current increase in global temperatures.
False
Which of the following statements would be considered a "climate" statement?
Florida is hot and humid
The increase in the consumption of animal products results in the release of which greenhouse gas?
Methane
Our atmosphere is primarily composed of the gas...
Nitrogen
Which of the following is not considered a "greenhouse gas"?
Nitrogen
In 2016, nations from across the globe came together and created the ______________________, a treaty to reduce the levels of CO2 emissions by the year 2100.
Paris Climate Accord
The Earth's Ozone layer is important in that it absorbs much of the harmful UV radiation trying to reach the Earth's surface. In which layer of the Earth's atmosphere is the Ozone layer?
Stratosphere
Climate is based upon which of the following atmospheric variables? (check all that apply)
Temperature Humidity/Precipitation
When comparing the increase of greenhouse gases to the current global temperatures, there is a direct correlation between these events and the current increase in global temperatures.
True
Florida has hot temperatures year-round and therefore would have a final classification letter of ________.
a
Nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor are naturally recycled back to the atmosphere via the process of
volcanic outgassing
If the Earth had no greenhouse gases/effect, the Earth's average temperature would be
much colder than it is today
As more carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere, how will this influence the oceans?
ocean acidity will increase
Milankovitch Cycles explain changes in the Earth's climate based on changes in Earth's _______________________.
orbital patterns
The most widely accepted theory of the source of these extra "heat-trapping" gases is
the burning of fossil fuels
The primary concern about the current increase in global temperatures is....
the speed at which the temperature increase will occur
These greenhouse gases keep the Earth warm by...
absorbing outgoing infrared (heat) energy and re-radiating it back towards the surface
If we were to reach this threshold temperature, which of the following are expected to occur?
all of the above
The best explanation for different levels of ocean rise or fall in different regions is

How does "isostasy" explain sea-level rise along coastlines?
as ice sheets retreat, the crust rebounds to its original position, lowering the coastlines
The relationship between Sunspots and Solar Irradiance is an inverse relationship. So, as a result as the number of sunspots increases, global temperatures will
