As a result of the controversy however, Nirvana received a lot of attention for In Utero. The strong polished production of this album attracted new audiences, and sold more than 4 million copies. More drug overdoses, suicide attempts, and substance abuse issues followed the release of In Utero until Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home. Other artists of significant influence in rock 'n' roll history In the preface of this book I describe our intent to provide an "appetizer" for rock 'n' roll. It is impossible to cover every significant artist and detail every success (or failure!) of the artists that we cover in a text designed for a one-semester course. We have provided what we believe to be a "well-rounded overview" of the evolution of rock 'n' roll that educates both the novice on the origins and innovations of this music, and, fills some gaps for the more experienced enthusiast. With over 15,000 students completing UNLV's History of Rock course with this text since 2008, there hasn't been a single student walk away without discovering, not one, but many pieces of information they found enlightening. That certainly makes us happy as authors and course developers; however, we receive requests constantly to add other significant artists that have impacted rock music history. The conundrum is that we want to stay away from relatively new artists, despite major success in some cases, due to the fact they are not yet in the "history" of rock 'n' roll. But, we do want to recognize major contributions. Over the past few years, we've kept track of these requests while simultaneously researching pivotal points, changes and trends. We have now added this chapter to feature artists and bands who we believe have made contributions to rock 'n' roll that have changed, defined and reshaped the art-form.
