Define the 2 types of depth of narration

Objective: If we are confined to just hearing and seeing the characters words and actions. e.g. We only see and hear the actions of Nux in FR. Subjective: Can be seen perceptually or mentally. Getting an insight into a characters thoughts is subjective. e.g. Max has visions in FR.

Order

Order of events in the story as they're given in the plot.

Define the two types of range of narration

Restricted narration means the audience knows about as much as the characters on screen. e.g. Gromit follows and spies on the penguin but we don't know what the penguins doing. Unrestricted narration means we know pretty much everything. e.g. in FR we know that the Immorten Joe has left to get Furiosa but she doesn't know.

Name and explain the 3 types of duration

Story duration: Very first event to the very last event Plot duration: Duration of things given to us in the plot Screen Duration: running time of the film

Story vs Plot

Story is the world of the story, inferred events as well. Plot is just what we see on the screen. e.g. Citizen Kane story is 70 years (life of Kane) plus one week for the case. Plot is just one week (duration of case).

Suspense vs Surprise

Suspense is used in unrestricted narrative films as the audience knows what's happened, but are waiting for the when. Surprise is seen in restricted narrative films such as crime films, as the audience doesn't know what's going to happen.

Hierarchy of Knowledge

Who knows the most to who knows the least. How much information do we know compared to what the characters know.
