Nursing Fundamental 105 Ch 5
Three stages and consequences of general adaptation syndrome
Alarm Stage- immediate onset stress m, storage vesicles within sympathetic nervous system neurons releasing norepinephrine, prepare fight or flight Stage of Resistance-restoring to normal Exhaustion-one or more adaptive or resistive mechanisms can no kinder protect the person
Identify two beliefs about the body and mind based on the concept of holism
1. Both the body and mind directly influence humans 2. The relationship between the body and mind can potentially sustain health as well as cause illness
Three levels of prevention that apply to reducing or managing stress-related disorders
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary
Explain Psychological adaptation and two possible outcomes
Psychological adaptation is the functional, cognitive and behavioral traits that benefits an organism in its environment. Two possible outcomes are 1. The body's physical respondent is always the same and 2. Follows a 1,2,3 stage pattern : alarm stage, stage of resistance and stage of exhaustion.
Explain Homeostasis and list categories stressors that affect it
Homeostasis is staying the same and some stressors affecters are physiologic, psychological, soical and spiritual.
Nursing activities helpful to the care of clients prone to stress and approaches of preventing, reducing or eliminating a stress response
Modeling, progressive relaxation, yoga, meditation, and prayer place bo effect. Approaches, reducing and eliminating to stress response are alternative thinking, behavior and lifestyle techniques
The structures through which adaptive responses take place
Neurotransmitters, Central Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System and Endocrine
Differentiate between sympathetic and parasympathetic adaptive responses
Sympathetic prepares the body for fight or flight and parasympathetic restores equilibrium after danger is gone
The purpose of adaptation and two possible outcomes of unsuccessful adaptation
The purpose of adaptation is to regulate homeostasis and a possible outcome is stress
Define stress and lost factors that affect the stress response
Stress is the physiologic and behavioral response led to disequilibrium and factors that affect stress responses are intensity of stressors, number of stressors, duration of the stressors, physical health status, life experiences, coping strategies, social support.
