What do you see yourself doing five years from now?

You get a call next year from a girl considering participating in the queen pageant. What advice do you give her?

Definitely do it. You will not regret it. It would be an opportunity for you to make many great friendships, it is something too look forward too each week aws you prepare for the contest, and participating will improve skills like communication, critical thinking, and helps build your self confidence.

Where do you find the answers to life's toughest questions?

First I talk to God to find answers to life's toughest questions--then I rely on my grandma because I know she is full of wisdom and always gives the best advice.

What do you do for fun?

For fun I shoot basketballs, travel, play with my dog, and make TikToks. Something that I have also taken up recently is weightlifting at the gym.

What have you learned about being in this pageant?

From this pageant I have learned how to adapt to different situations and I have developed better problem-solving skills. While participating in this pageant I have also learned a lot about myself like how I feel comfortable speaking in front of others.

If you could change one thing about the jasper county fair what would it be?

Honestly I truly love our fair. I think it is one of the best around, but if I had to change one thing about the Jasper County Fair it would be to have the Junior Leaders plan an activities time for all 4-Hers to do together. We used to do Battle of the Barns and even had dances and games. It would be great to bring something like this back for kids of all ages.

Why did you choose your career path?

I chose my career path because I have been around animals all my life. Ever since I can remember I have wanted to care for animals, so pursuing a degree in Animal Science was the obvious choice for me.

What are three life lessons that you have learned from your parents?

I have learned many life lessons from my parents. One of them is to always be kind towards others and treat them the way I want to be treated in return. Secondly, to always be humble. I should never take things for granted, and be thankful for what I have and what I work for. Lastly, my parents have always taught my siblings and I to admit to our mistakes. There is no such thing as a perfect person, and it is okay to make mistakes--it's how we learn from them.

What can be used to prevent teens from texting and driving?

I think that they best way to prevent teens from texting and driving is to set an example ourselves. When kids see adults texting and driving, they think that it is okay for them to do the same. So if we adults stop, hopefully teens will start to do the same.

Why do you want to be Miss Jasper County?

I want to be Miss Jasper County because it has always been a dream of mine. As a little girl I loved watching the queen pageant and seeing the queens around the fair. It was a tradition for my family and I to go each year. It would be an honor to represent Miss Jasper County and to be able to give back to the communities in our county throughout the year.

What would you do as Jasper County Fair queen that would have us commenting that you were one of our best queens?

I want to be remembered for being the queen who was friendly, outgoing and involved with the 4-Hers and other fairgoers. If I am crowned Miss Jasper County, I want to be known as the queen who took the time to stop and talk to the little girls just like I was once and maybe even let them try on my crown and take a picture. As queen it's also important to stay involved with all of the communities in jasper county.

What advice would you give a fellow peer about peer pressure?

I would tell a fellow peer to remember what their future looks like and that they do not want to ruin what is ahead of them. I would also make sure they know they do have me as a friend always for support and guidance.

If you could change one thing about your high school experience, what would it be?

If I could change one thing about my high school experience it would be for it to have slowed down. Those four years sure flew by so quickly. I definitely wish it wouldn't have ended the way that it did though being in the class of 2020--But my classmates and I made the best of it by keeping in touch and staying positive.

If you are chosen as Miss Jasper County what is the first thing you'll do?

If I were chosen as Miss Jasper County, I would say thank you to the judges, my sponsors, directors and hug my family. Then I would congratulate the rest of the girls on a job well done.

If I looked at your facebook what would I see?

If someone were to look at my facebook, they would see pictures of my family, my friends, many videos of my dog, and lots of recipes that I would love to cook. I normally only use facebook to post pictures of what I love, and I also love to look at yummy recipes.

If I considered moving to Jasper County, convince me that this is the place.

Jasper County is full of several little welcoming communities. The small town atmosphere makes living here the best. This county is beautiful and there are so many different places to visit, some that are very rich in history.

What three qualities should Miss Jasper County posses?

Miss Jasper County should be friendly and a people person because she will have to be sociable to people of all ages. She should be someone with good energy and charisma. Genuinely a happy person that people want to be around.

What has your 4H experience taught you?

My 4-H experience has taught me responsibility, leadership, and compassion. I am also part of a team when it comes to 4-H projects. Being the oldest of 4 children comes with a lot of responsibility. Every person plays a part in our success in our 4-H projects. I learned that these projects are not just single person, but family projects.

What is your definition of success?

My definition of success is being able to take care of your family, yourself, and overall being content. And if I can achieve this, I will be greatful.

What motivates you to put forth your greatest effort?

My family motivates me to put forth my greatest effort. They are my biggest supports and disappointing them is one of my greatest fears.

What is your favorite thing about jasper county fair?

My favorite thing about the Jasper county fair is definitely the pig show day. This is the day of the fair that draws the most crowd which makes it so exciting. There is a lot of anticipation leading to the night show because for all of the 4-H's would like to be in the grand drive and that they have worked so hard for that opportunity.

If you where chosen as Miss Jasper County What would your first tweet say?

My first tweet as Miss Jasper County would be thanking my family, sponsors, court, and the Jasper county fair board for allowing us to have this opportunity. I would also mention how fun it is to be a part of the pageant and encourage all young ladies try it out.

What does your future look like?

My future includes receiving a college degree in Animal Science and pursuing a career that I am passionate about. At this time I see myself working with animals in the veterinary field.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

My greatest accomplishment is signing to play basketball at the collegiate level with all of the awards that I also received. Not many people can say they scored over 1,000 points or that they played sports at the next level.

What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

My greatest strength is friendliness because I hate to see people that feel out of place or sad. If I was feeling out of place I hope someone would make me feel welcome, so I always strive to be that person for others. My greatest weakness is taking on too many tasks at once. I love to help people and I hate to turn others down, so sometimes I end up over stressing myself but still am determined to get the job done.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

My mom has been the most influential person in my life because she gives me a different perspective on life and she pushes me to overcome my weaknesses.

Tell me about yourself...

My name is Sydney and I graduated from Rensselaer Central High School. For as long as I can remember my family and I have raised livestock and played sports together. My 10 years of 4-H not only provided me with many different life skills like responsibility, leadership, and character but it also has given me many amazing friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. I attended Indiana University Northwest on a collegiate basketball scholarship. Now, I am finishing the rest of my bachelor's degree at Purdue University to prepare for vet school. After I finish vet school I plan to open my own practice, travel, and raise my own family here in Jasper County.

What are your three favorite places in Jasper County?

My three favorite places in Jasper county are Fountain Park because it is built on my families land and is only one of two in the US--the other one being in New York, the high school basketball gymnasium because I have spent countless hours playing my favorite game, and of course the fairgrounds--where beyond the experiences of 4-H, I have made multiple life long friendships and countless memories that I will never forget.

What have you done to prepare for this pageant?

Over the past several weeks I have prepared for this pageant by attending each weekly practice, received constructive criticism, and prepared with my family. I already have experienced a year of college as well, and this has prepared me for other real-life situations.

What about participating in the queen pageant has made you a better person?

Something that has made me a better person from participating in this queen pageant is my drive to want to do more for the community beyond just representing the county during fair week and serving others.

How would you describe yourself? What makes you unique?

Something that makes me unique is that I believe in myself. I do not usually give up on anything, and with this attitude I know that I will achieve many things in life.

What do you think is the hardest thing about being a teenager?

The hardest thing about being a teenager I would have to say is not giving into peer pressure. High school can be challenging and it's easy to let yourself make bad decisions. Especially because most kids want to be doing what others are doing and what they think is "cool." Peer pressure can be powerful and hard for young kids to resist.

What was the last book that you read?

The last book that I read was A Dog's Purpose. It is about a loyal dog that is reincarnated into several different dog breeds. He teaches humans how to laugh and love and discovers himself throughout his different lives. I loved this book because dogs are something that I am obsessed with and very passionate about.

What was the last thing that made you laugh?

The last thing that made me laugh was Kristy. We were giving each other advice right before and just making each other laugh and feel comfortable so we weren't nervous!

What has been the most difficult/challenging experience you have encountered in your life?

The most challenging experience that I have encountered was when I had to have double knee surgery right before my senior year. This was heartbreaking for me because I thought that the dreams I had been chasing since I picked up a basketball were over. With hard work and dedication, I was able to overcome this obstacle, not miss one game that year, and even play at the next level.

What is the most rewarding thing about 4H?

The most rewarding thing about 4-H to me is making life long memories and seeing all of your hard work pay off. 4-H is a rewarding experience that teaches lifelong lessons.

How will this experience help you with your future ambitions?

This experience will help my public speaking, confidence, and communication skills. Being a part of this pageant has also helped improved my critical thinking skills.

What 3 words best describe you?

Three words that best describe me are first and foremost is determined because I set goals for myself constantly and never give up. Quirky because I sometimes like to crack jokes and love to laugh with my friends. And lastly passionate. With absolute best effort, I put my heart into everything I do. I believe that living life this way could take me anywhere with endless opportunities.

Do you feel that too much technology is good for the youth today?

To a certain point I think technology is very helpful to everyone. Especially from a school standpoint and the benefits it has provided for students. But when it comes to gaming, I think it can be addictive. Instead of kids playing outside and being active, they would rather sit on their electronics which is why it's important to encourage kids to become involved in extracurricular activities and find something they enjoy to keep them busy.

When you meet someone, what are the first two attributes that you notice?

When I first meet someone, the first two attributes that I notice are the person's smile and their body language.

How do you address conflict with a friend?

When there is a conflict with a friend I would approach the situation level-minded. I would not be accusatory and definitely explore the underlying issue first to get both perspectives and help resolve the issue.
