pH scale

A measure of acidity or alkalinity of water soluble substances (pH stands for 'potential of Hydrogen'). A pH value is a number from 1 to 14, with 7 as the middle (neutral) point. Values below 7 indicate acidity which increases as the number decreases, 1 being the most acidic.

H+

Acids add Hydrogen Ions (H+) to solutions. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) splits into Hydrogen Ions (H+) and Chloride Ions (Cl-). Extra H+ means acid solution (no more equal parts). the 1:1 ratio is changed, now there are too many H+, it turns acidic.

Base

Any of a class of compounds that form hydroxyl ions (OH) when dissolved in water, and whose aqueous solutions react with acids to form salts. Bases turn red litmus paper blue and have a pH greater than 7. Their aqueous solutions have a bitter taste.

Neutral

Belonging to neither kind; not one thing or the other; indifferent. Of or relating to a solution or compound that is neither acidic nor alkaline. Of or relating to a compound that does not ionize in solution. Of or relating to a particle, an object, or a system that has a net electric charge of zero.

OH-

Hydroxide is a diatomic anion with chemical formula OH−. It consists of an oxygen and hydrogen atom held together by a covalent bond, and carries a negative electric charge. It is an important but usually minor constituent of water.

pH 7

Neutral solutions (such as pure water) have a pH of 7, acidic solutions have a pH lower than 7, and alkaline solutions have a pH higher than 7.

Acid

a chemical substance that neutralizes alkalis, dissolves some metals, and turns litmus red; typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid of this kind.

pH 0-6.9

pH is a measure of hydrogen ion concentration; a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH scale usually ranges from 0 to 14. ... A pH level of is 7.0 at 25°C is defined as 'neutral' because the concentration of H3O+ equals the concentration of OH− in pure water.
