Anti Diuretic Hormone ADH

A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that increases the permeability of cells membranes, so they absorb more water, especially from urine, that results in small amounts of concentrated urine

Nephrogenic Diabetes

Diabetes caused by defect in renal tubules in kidneys causing them to be unresponsive to antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

Mechanoreceptor

a repeated physical action causes a hormone to be secreted, ex: suckling of an infant causes secretion of oxytocin

ectopic tumor

Causes pituitary to oversecrete ADH/AVP; patient stops peeing completely (leads to high blood pressure).

Aquaporins

water channel proteins that allow water to pass through- synthesized by ADH changing cell DNA

Central Diabetes insipitus

Polyuria, dilute urine, HYPERnatremia; Decreased ADH release from pituitary

High Blood Pressure

inhibits vassopressin

AVP

is synthesized in hypothalamus and carried to pars nervosa

Stalk

What is injured if a person starts profusely peeing and lactating?

Positive Feedback

A form of regulation in which an end product of a process speeds up that process; in physiology, a control mechanism in which a change in a variable triggers a response that reinforces or amplifies the change.

Oxytocin

A hormone released by the posterior pituitary that stimulates uterine contractions during childbirth and milk ejection during breastfeeding.

Nephro

after taking inhaler of desmopressin acetate, the patient keeps peeing

Central

after taking inhaler of desmopressin acetate, the patient stops peeing

Posterior Pituitary

direct extension of nervous tissue from hypothalamus. Nerve signals cause hormone release. Secretes two hormones: Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or vasopressin and oxytocin.

Osmolarity

level of concentration of body fluids- if you lose fluid, the concentration increases and the brain secretes more vasopressin (dark urine from AVP and high concentration)

small arteries

location of V1 receptors

kidneys

location of V2 receptors

ADH/AVP

made in pituitary glands, target is nephrons of the kidneys, helps control the balance of water in the body by causing the kidneys to reabsorb water

structure of oxytocin

nonapeptide
