Both "Beowulf" and "The Dream of the Rood" dealt with comparing and contrasting figures to Christ. Some figures contrasted Christ; they tried to accomplish things in their own strength or worshiped false gods. Some figures can be compared to Christ and help the reader learn something about the world God has made. Write a paragraph comparing either Beowulf or the rood to Christ. (By comparing them, you are not saying these figures are perfectly like Christ. You are arguing that they remind the reader of Christ in some ways, to help the reader understand God better.) Your paragraph should include at least THREE comparisons between the figure you choose and Jesus, based on what was discussed in the lessons. You do not need to quote directly from the poems, but you should make specific references.

There are many references to Jesus in these two stories. First, we have Beowulf. Beowulf was known as a friendly, kind, and strong man. He sacrificed his life to kill the dragon and save his people. Second is the Rood, or the cross. The cross is "soiled with blood" and "Covered in Light and Precious Stones." In one moment, it is seen as ugly and in shame, and another in beautiful, radiant light. This is an example of Jesus! The blood on the cross is pointing to Jesus on the cross, ugly and in shame, whipped to shreds and bleeding all over. But Jesus rose from the dead in radiant Glory. Another Great example is the dragon; In Genesis, I think 3, after the fall of man, God says something along the lines of "Man will stomp on the head of the serpent, and the serpent will strike at the heel of man." Beowulf killed the dragon, stomping on its head. The dragon bite poisoned Beowulf, striking at his heel.
