Ex Opere Operato

A Latin phrase that means literally, "by the very fact of the action's being performed." This is a guarantee to the faithful that if they are properly disposed, they will receive grace through the sacrament regardless of the personal sanctity of the person conferring the sacrament, since it is really Jesus who is acting through the minister.

Sponsor

A baptized, confirmed, and practicing Catholic who presents a child or adult for Baptism or Confirmation (and professes the Faith in the case of an infant). This person prays for the one being sponsored and helps with his or her religious instruction.

Immersion

A method of baptizing whereby the whole person is submerged in water. The Catholic rite of Baptism provides for Baptism by ______ or effusion(infusion)

Profession of Faith

A synthesis or summary of the Faith professed by Christians. Professors of Faith are also known "Symbols of Faith" or "Creeds", derived from the Latin credo, meaning "I believe". The most common Creeds are the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed.

Original Sin

Adam and Eve's abuse of their human freedom in disobeying God's command. As a consequence they lost the grace of original holiness and became subject to the law of death. Every human being is born with this condition which separates mankind from God, darkens the human intellect, weakens the human will, and introduces into human nature an inclination toward sin.

Ephphatha

An Aramaic word that means literally "be opened!" It is the word that Jesus spoke when he cured a deaf-mute. It is the prayer said over the mouth and ears of a newly baptized infant asking that his or her ears may be opened to hear God's word, and his mouth be opened to sing God's praises.

Domestic Church

An ancient expression for the Christian family. The family manifests and lives out the communal and familial nature of the Church as the family of God. Each family member, in accord with his or her own role, exercises the Baptismal priesthood and contributes toward making the family a community of grace and prayer, a school of human and Christian virtue, and the place where the Faith is first proclaimed to children.

Didache

An early Christian writing (ca. A.D. 60) of unknown authorship. It summarizes morality as a choice between the path of life and the path of death, liturgical practice, and disciplinary norms.

Sacrament

An efficacious sign of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed through the work of the Holy Spirit. There are seven sacraments.

An event or person in Scripture that points forward to a latter event or person.

Sacramental Character

An indelible mark, i.e., a permanent and unrepeatable spiritual quality, imprinted on the soul by the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, that gives the Christian a share in the priesthood of Christ.

Enlightenment

Ascension

Forty days after his Resurrection, the entry of Jesus' humanity into divine glory.

Catechumen

From the Greek for "one being instructed." This new convert is being instructed in the Christian Faith before Baptism.

Protoevangelium

From the Greek meaning "first" and "bringing good news". The first message of Good News—the first Gospel—is Genesis 3:15 in which the promise of the Messiah and Redeemer is foretold.

Hebrew for "anointed." This is used in reference to Jesus because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission of priest. prophet, and king, signified by his being anointed as Christ.

Redemption

Literally meaning "being bought back," the act by which Jesus Christ, through his sacrificial Death on the Cross, set us free from the slavery of sin, thus redeeming or "buying us back" from the power of the Devil.

Baptism of Blood

One who suffers death for the sake of the Faith, without having been baptized, is "baptized" by his or her death for and with Christ.

Trinitarian Formation

Part of the form used in the Sacrament of Baptism: "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." "The essential rite of Baptism consists in immersing the candidate in water or pouring water on his head, while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit"

Sacrilege

Profaning the sacraments or other liturgical actions, or things consecrated to God in a special way, such as priests, religious women and men, churches, shrines, covenants or monasteries, icons, statues, etc. Extreme irreverence by word or deed.

Grace: actual, sanctifying, role in our lives

Sanctifying grace is grace that heals us completely and brings us into complete union with God (baptism & confession). Actual grace is God's life and love as help for situations in daily life.

Resurrection

The bodily rising of Jesus from the dead, as he had foretold, on the third day after his death on the cross and burial in the tomb. By virtue of his resurrection, Christians have the hope of resurrection with Christ on the last day.

Concupiscence

The disordered state of human appetites or desires which remain even after Baptism due to the temporal consequences of Original Sin and which constitute an inclination to sin. This is often used to refer to desires resulting from strong sensual urges or attachment to things of this world.

Baptism

The first of the seven Sacraments that gives access to the other Sacraments; first and chief Sacrament of Forgiveness of Sins because the baptized Christian receives the remission of bother perusal and Original Sin. It incorporates him or her into the Church, the body of Christ.

Sanctifying Grace

The instruction and formation of catechumens, those being prepared for Baptism. This also refers to the catechumens collectively and their position with respect to the Church.

The material or physical sign of a sacrament. Ex: water (Baptism) and bread and wine (the Eucharist)

Vocation

The particular plan or calling that God has for each individual in this life and hereafter. All people have a ______ to love and serve God and are all called to the perfection of holiness. Conditional Baptism

This is administered when there is a doubt that Baptism was validly conferred and so is done "conditionally", that is, on the condition that the Sacrament was not previously received.

covenant

a solemn agreement between people or between God and man involving mutual commitments and guarantees.

charism

a specific gift or grace of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefits the Church, given in order to help a person live out the Christian life, or to serve the common good in building up the Church.

ex opere operato

a term in sacramental theology (literally "by the work done"), meaning that sacraments are effective by means of the sacramental rites themselves, and not because of the worthiness of the minister of recipient

Actual Sin

a thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to God's eternal law. It is a human act that presumes (a) a knowledge of wrongdoing, (b) awareness of malice in one's conduct, and (c) consent of the will. It damages a person's relationship with God

Sacramental Character (Seal)

an indelible mark imprinted on the soul by the Sacrament of at Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders that gives the Christian a greater share in the priesthood of Christ.

habitual grace

an infused gift of the Holy Spirit by which a person receives the divine life of God in one's soul. This grace is also called "sanctifying" grace and through it a person receives the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. This enables one to live as a true disciple of Christ.

the name given the assembly of people whom God has called together from the ends of the earth. This world has three meanings: the people that God gathers together, the local church (diocese), and the liturgical assembly. Also, the name given to a building used for public Christian worship.
