ACE inhibitors

"PRIL" Captopril, Enalapril, Afosiopril Antihypertensive. Blocks ACE in lungs from converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II (powerful vasoconstrictor). Decreases BP, Decreased Aldosterone secretions, Sodium and fluid loss.

Angiotensin II

1. potent vasoconstrictor of arterioles 2. stimulates aldosterone release from adrenal cortex 3. stimulates vasopressin (ADH) release from the posterior pituitary gland. RAISES BLOOD PRESSURE

renin

An enzyme secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells when blood pressure or blood volume decreases. Renin converts angiotensinogen to angiotensin I.

aldosterone

Steroid hormone from the adrenal cortex that stimulates the kidney to retain sodium. Water follows salt so blood volume goes up which then raises blood pressure.

renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system

a hormone cascade that increases blood pressure and blood volume

angiotensinogen

a plasma protein produced by the liver. Renin converts angiotensinogen into angiotensin 1. Angiotensinogen literally means "vessel tensing generator"

angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)

converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II

Antidiuretic hormone (ADH, vasopressin)

released from posterior pituitary gland; causes kidneys to reabsorb more water. This increases blood volume which increases blood pressure.
