What is a knox box?

What are key operated switches?

"Key Operated Switches" are used on restricted parking gates, electrically operated doors, elevator controls and any electrical control circuit that the Fire Department must override in an emergency, the switch is designed to open the gate by turning the key to the "ON" position and removing it. The gate should stay open until the key is re-inserted and turned back to the original position. At that time, the gate should close. The reason the gate is to remain open until activated again is to permit several emergency vehicles access.

What are security Padlocks?

"Security Padlocks" are used on perimeter and fire access gates, fire sprinkler system valves, shutoff valves for hazardous chemicals, etc. The key is retained when opened on all padlocks. Only the Department's Master Key can access these systems. Keys are not available to locksmiths or lock distributors, only the Knox Company can supply these keys. Also each city has its exclusive key code. All Knox-Box stations in that city are keyed alike.

May also be referred to as batten doors. Most commonly found in warehouses, storerooms, barns, sheds, etc. these doors are made of planks fastened to horizontal and diagonal ledge boards.

What is the process that occurs when the use of a Knox box key or master key is needed?

Only the Fire Department has the master keys, and only the Fire Department can authorize a Knox-Box system. The encoder and decoder devices are used when the dispatcher receives and verifies a request from authorized personnel on the fire apparatus for a master key release. The dispatcher, using the encoder device installed at the dispatch center, sends a special coded signal over the existing two-way radio to the Sentralok unit installed in the fire apparatus, the decoder is securely mounted in the fire apparatus. When the signal from the dispatcher is received a red light on the decoder will come on and both the access key and master key are turned clockwise releasing the master key.
