Rock Transformation Vocab.
energy
the ability to make things move or change - I have so much energy to run
erosion
the movement of sediment from one place to another, often caused by wind or flowing water - kids moving from class to the bus is like people erosion, if the kids were rocks?
plate boundary
the place where two plates meet - Plate boundary can tell you where two plates meet
uplift
the process by which all the rock formations of a region are pushed up due to plate motion -increasing upward force applied from below or decreasing downward force is known as uplift
Subduction
the process by which rock material moves under Earth's outer layer and into the mantle due to plate motion - When the oceanic plate is being forced into the mantle and is known as subduction
weathering
the process of rock breaking down into smaller pieces due to wind or moving water - Weathering physically breaks up the rock.
compaction
the process of sediment being buried and pressed together - The compaction of the brownies are bad.
Cementation
the process of sediment being glued together - When you put glue on a paper and put another paper on top the paper Cementation together.
metamorphic rock
the rock type formed when heat or pressure deep underground changes existing rock - Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock limestone.
igneous rock
the rock type formed when magma cools and becomes solid - Magma shoots out of a volcano and cools and makes igneous rock
sedimentary rock
the rock type formed when sediment is pressed and glued together - Granite rocks are a sedimentary rock
rock formation
a region of rock that formed together as a single rock type - igneous rock or granite is an example of rock formation
sample
a small part that is meant to show what the whole is like -Have a sample of my cake
matter
anything that has mass and takes up space - A dining table made of wood is matter -matter is everything we see being made of particles of elements and atoms.
rock materials
everything made of rock: magma, sediment, and all rock types - sediments are a type of rock material
magma
hot liquid rock below the surface of Earth - Magma comes from a volcano
mineral
one of the different types of matter that make up rocks - minerals help make rocks
plate
one of the very large sections of hard, solid rock that make up Earth's outer layer - A convergent boundary is an example of plate
sediment
small pieces of rock - small pieces of rocks are sediments
cross section
a diagram that shows what the inside of something looks like - I use a cross section to show what is inside of the apple.
