Anita is speaking. *hint* this is when Anita and Chucha plan to make Lorena (house cleaner) leave. You will notice that throughout the book, Anita is the only one who reflects on her feelings of revolting.

"I feel like screaming, I AM NOT CRAZY! But instead, I swallow that scream, and suddenly it's very quiet inside of me." (79)

Anita is speaking. *hint* this is when Anita starts losing her voice.

"You will see them before they come back but only after you are free." (11)

Chucha is speaking. *hint* remember that most moments pointing to the future are Chucha speaking.

"Not everyone can be a butterfly." (66)

Chucha is speaking. *hint* this is when Chucha is telling Anita her vision about how everyone but Tio Toni and Papi will go to America.

"I just want you to know...that I...I...I'm sorry for anything mean that I've ever done." (72)

Lucinda is speaking. *hint* this is the night before Lucinda leaves. Look for context clues in this - you can tell that this is a sibling bond.

"Maybe we've told you too much? Maybe we have made you grow up too fast?...I wanted yo to have a childhood." (84)

Mami is speaking. *hint* this is when she realizes that Anita hasn't been able to experience a real childhood.

"Trujillo Jr. and his cronies were quite drunk. We're not sure, but they might have been drugged up. At any rate, they tied the prisoners to palm trees and shot them, one by one, until they were all dead. Then the bodies were taken out to sea and dumped over the side of the boat." (151)

Mr. Washburn is speaking. *hint* this is an important point of the story because it is when he is explaining that Papi and Tio Toni will not be making there way to America.

"I'm going with Papi." (96)

Mundin is speaking. *hint* this is when he decided that he will go on the mission with the men.

"I want my children to be free, no matter what. Promise me you'll spread your wings and fly." (80)

Papi is speaking. *hint* this is when Anita starts to understand what is happening in the DR.

"Wow! We could go to a Yankees game. Mom...Anita just invited me to come to New York to see Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle play." (156)

Sammy is speaking. *hint* this shows that Sammy is oblivious to the fact that he may be able to do whatever he wants, but Anita and her family are suffering right now.

Type of Speech - "Oscar's hand is waving and dipping like a palm tree is in a cyclone." (3)

This is a simile because 'like' is used to compare two things.

Type of Speech - "I look up at the portrait of our Benefactor, El Jefe, which hangs above classroom, his eyes watching over us. To his left hangs George Washington in his white wig..." (4)

This is juxtaposition because they are comparing George and Trujillo to represent how horrible Trujillo is.

Type of Speech - "'Your jewelry box.' I suggest. It'll be a way to take more than one thing. The box is filled with Carla's bangles and her butterfly pin and chain with a little cross--jewelry that isn't real gold." (7)

This is symbolism because the bangles represent coming of age, the butterfly pin represents freedom, and the necklace represents hope. The box represents that the Gracias finally get freedom, and soon Lucinda, Anita, Mundin, and Mami will, too.
