Compound

Two sentences that have been combined. Both parts of a compound sentence could stand alone if they needed to.

Predicate Noun

a predicate noun follows a linking verb and identifies, renames, or defines the subject.

Subject

The subject is what or who the sentence is about.

Predicate Adjective

is an adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies or describes the subject.

Hook

statement designed to get the reader's attention

Thesis statement

states the writer's opinion or position on the topic

Independent

A clause that can stand alone as a sentence

Dependent

A clause that does not stand alone as a sentence but depends on another clause to complete its meaning:

Simple Sentence

A complete sentence/clause that contains a subject and a verb (predicate).

Run-On

A grammatically faulty sentence that has two independent clauses without a word or punctuation mark to separate them.

Clauses

A group of words in a sentence that contains a subject and a verb (predicate).

Indirect Object

A noun or pronoun naming something that indirectly is affected by the action of a verb.

Direct Object

A noun, pronoun or group of words serving as the receiving end of an action, such as the ball in "John hit the ball."

Predicate

A predicate is also called a verb and it tells what the subject is or what the subject does.

Interrogative

A sentence that asks a question.

Compound-Complex

A sentence that contains two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

Complex

A sentence that has one simple sentence (independent clause) and one dependent clause.

Declarative (.)

A sentence that makes a statement and it ends with a period.

Exclamatory (!)

A sentence that shows strong emotion; always ends with an exclamation point.

Imperative (. or !)

A sentence that tells or asks someone to do something; usually end with a period but may end with an exclamation point.

Fragment

A sentence that's missing a subject or verb.
