Skin and Body Membranes
What do Connective Tissue membranes consist of ?
synovial membranes
What is the serous membrane made up of?
A layer of simple squamous epithelium resting on a thin layer of areolar connective tissue.
What are the functions of mucous membranes?
Absorption and secretion.
What are the characteristics of mucus membrane?
All mucus membranes are wet, or moist. They are almost continuously bathed in secretions or, in the case of the urinary mucosae, urine.
Synovial Membrane
Composed of connective tissue. Lines the fibrous capsule surrounding joints
Mucous Membrane
Composed of epithelium and lines all body cavities that open to the exterior. Ex. hollow organs or the respiratory and digestive tracts
What do epithelial membranes consist of?
Cutaneous, mucous, and serous membranes
What is mucus membrane composed of?
Epithelium with underlying Loose Connective Tissue called Lamina Propria. (Note: most mucosa contain either stratified squamous epithelium, as in the mouth and esophagus, or simple columnar
Epithelial Membrane
Includes the cutaneous membrane, mucous membrane, and the serous membrane. Also called covering and lining membranes
What is the cutaneous membrane composed of?
Keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. The underlying dermis is mostly dense (fibrous) connective tissue. -- different from serous and mucous membranes b/c it is dry and exposed to air
What are the functions of skin?
Protection, insulation, prevents water loss from the body surface, acts as a mini-excretory system, the site of vitamin D synthesis, regulates heat loss.
Where are mucus membrane located?
Mucus membranes line all body cavities that open to the exterior, such as those of the hollow organs of the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts.
Serous Fluid Purpose:
Serous fluid allows the organs to slide easily across the cavity walls and one another without friction as they carry out their routine functions.
Visceral Layer
Serous membrane that covers the outside of the organs
Parietal Layer
Serous membrane that lines a specific portion of the wall of the ventral body cavity
Serous Membranes (special characteristic):
Serous membranes occur in pairs. The PARIETAL(parie = wall) layer lines a specific portion of the wall of the ventral body cavity. It folds in on itself to form the VISCERAL layer, which covers the outside of the organs in that cavity. -- think fist in a balloon
What are Synovial membranes composed of?
Soft areolar connective tissue and they contain no epithelial cells at all
Pleura
The serosa lining the lungs
Pericardium
The serosa surrounding the heart
Peritoneum
The serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity and its coverings.
What are the functions of body membranes?
They cover surfaces, line body cavities, and form protective (and sometimes lubricating) sheets around organs.
What is the function of Synovial membranes?
They cushion organs moving against each other during muscle activity. They also line small sacs of bursae and tendon sheaths.
Where are serous membranes located?
They line body cavities that are closed to the exterior (the internal ventral body cavities and covers their organs.)
Where are Synovial membranes located?
They line the fibrous capsules around joints, and secrete a lubricating fluid. They also line small sacs of connective tissue called bursae and the tube-like tendon sheaths
