Specialized cells and tissues
Connective tissues (Animals)
Connects, supports, & protects other tissues Ex: fat cells, blood, bone, tendons, ligaments, heart
Root tips (Plants)
NOT TISSUE. Root cap protects root during growth. Apical meristem is where growth occurs. Root hairs increase surface area to absorb water.
Ground tissue (Plants)
Photosynthesis & nutrient storage, support, and protection. Many chloroplasts found near food storage
Epithelial tissue (Animals)
Protect from dehydration and form the lining of all internal and external body surfaces ex: Skin, stomach, esophagus, & lining of digestive tract
Dermal tissue (Plants)
Protects plant and prevents water loss Ex: like epidermis, guard cells (open & close stomata & used for gas exchange), Stomata (hole in the leaf & controlled by water),
Muscular tissue (Animals)
Responsible for the movement & support of the body Ex: Skeletal (voluntary), Smooth (involuntary), Heart (involuntary). Tissue has the most mitochondria
Nervous tissue (Animals)
Sends and receives info about external & internal environment Ex: Brain, nerves, & spinal cord
Vascular tissue (Plants)
Transport of water & minerals Ex: Xylem (Water goes up), Transport of sugar Ex: Phloem (Sugar goes down)
Stem cells (Unspecialized)
Unspecialized and can become anything. Good for research.
