why is mean arterial pressure closer to diastolic pressure than to systolic pressure? how is it calculated?

MAP is closer to diastolic because the heart spends more time in diastole than systole. MAP= diastolic +1/3 (pulse pressure)

why no sound is heard when the sphygmomanometer is not inflated?

No constriction of the artery and blood flow is silent.

how is blood pressure measured

a cuff is placed over the brachial artery and inflated to pressure that is greater than the expected systolic pressure. the high pressure stops blood flow through the brachial artery and no sounds are heard. cuff pressure is decreased (systolic) blood spurts through the vessel with each heart beat.
