TCM Theories 1 The cause of disease
TRAUMA (as Miscellaneous pathogenic factor/evil)
Accidents and Unpredictable occurrence incl. insects bites, parasites, toxic and infectious entities
Types of WIND
Exogenous Wind: Wind Cold Wind Heat (+/- dampness) Endogenous Wind= Liver Wind Liver Wind High Heat Liver Wind Yang Rising Liver Wind Blood Vacuity (Deficiency)
Flow: 1. Flux of Yin ang Yang
Relation between Yin And Yang and how harmonious it is.
Flow: 3. Flow of Ying and Wei
Ying and Wei exterior interior relation Ying Qi (inside) is Qi of blood and nutrients. Farther to be metabolized broken down, transformed. Ying Qi strengthens the Wei Qi Wei Qi (on the surface) body resistance of the surface. Wei Qi depends on health of Ying Qi Cold can injure the Wei Qi
Righteous Qi (True Qi) = Zheng Qi
Zheng Qi that what stays with opposition to the pathogenic process (supports flow). Deficiency in organs weakening the Zheng Qi The stronger the Zheng Qi the more resistance to pathogenic factors we are, the faster you recover from disease.
PHLEGM DISEASE (as Miscellaneous pathogenic factor/evil)
an advance disease state
FEAR
1. Causes Qi to descend 2. affects KIDNEY
ANGER
1. Causes Qi to rise (liver Yang rising) 2. most destructive emotion 3. incl. moodiness, repressed anger or depression, these = LV Qi stagnation 4. affects LIVER
SUMMER HEAT (as pathogenic facto/evil)
1. Combine pathogen of Heat and Dampness 2. Heat = defic of Body Fluids 3. Damp= stagnation of Body Fluids 4. Yang pathogen but milder because of presents of Yin SumHeat= acute pathogen vs Damp Heat= chronic patogen
COLD (as pathogenic factor/evil)
1. Contraction and slowing of Qi and blood 2. Sharp pain 3. Pain and symptoms better with warmth 4. Fluids: build up 5. Secretion: profuse, thin, clear 6. Diarrhea-Sp not transforming 7. Aggravate with Cold 8. Yin pathogen-damaging to Yang entities 9. Kid & Lu more vulnerable to cold, Spleen hates cold Interior cold=cold limbs=Yang def. (sx det which organ involved but root=Kid Yang)
SADNESS (MELANCHOLY)
1. Dissolves Qi 2. Separation or Release 3. affects LUNG but also HEART
Endogenous Pathogenic Factor (Evil) EMOTIONS
1. Emotions=Qi reaction, cause Qi to misdirect 2. Love is an action not emotion 3. Each organ attached to emotion 4. lack of appropriate emotional response=disease in related organ 5. Weakness in organ= emotional imbalance 6. All emotion manifest in the hart (stores Shen, need free of emotion to rule well) 7. Lv pathology effect by emotions, Lv regulates communication system
GREIF
1. Extreme chronic sadness 2. Affects HEART an LUNG
DAMPNESS (as a pathogenic factor/evil)
1. Key symptom: FULLNESS 2. Heaviness, heavy limbs, lethargy, distention, turbidity (metnosc) 3. Thirst: NO THIRST 4. long standing, complex, and slow to respond 5. Always involve vacuity, cause by weak Spleen 6. Clear can't rise so foggy head 7. Causes stagnation of vital substances: Bld, Qi etc. 8. Yin pathogen: causes damage to Yang of Sp, Kid, Lu (Sp makes damp, Lu stores, Kid is root) 9. to yin diet cause dampness (ice-cream, cold food, refine sugar 10. cause by Spleen not able to transform, not usable pathogenic fluids 11. dampness cause stagnation
WORRY (PENSIVENESS)
1. Knots the Qi 2. Incomplete thought of Heart is the YI of Spleen 3. Introspection, obsessing, brooding, unexpressed mental energy 4. Not equal intelligence 5. affects SPLEEN but engendered in HEART
LIVER WIND LIVER YANG RISING
1. Liver yang rising due to qi or blood deficiency (vacuity) 2. underlying vacuity of Qi or blood 3. Combine Repletion/ Vacuity pattern 4. Weak yin is not able to contain yang- so yang is rising more then wind 5. yang goes to the head 6. Symptoms: headache, hypertension, anger, dizziness, various eye symptoms, stoke, ringing in the ear, one-side paralysis, difficult falling a sleep 7. because of vacuity treatment can't be to aggressive
PANIC (FRIGHT)
1. Scatters Qi 2. more sudden then fear 3. Affects HEART (usually HT BLD deficiency)
WIND HEAT
1. Simultaneous CHILLS & FEVER (predominant fever) 2. Attacks FACE: eyes, nose, throat - burning, tearing, painful stuffy, hot inflamed throat 3. PERSPIRATION 4. Fluids: thick and not a lot - congested nose 5. Secretion: scanty, thick, yellow 6. Aversion: to HEAT! 7. Fever: low great MOST COMMON - Bacterial or viral infection
WIND COLD
1. Simultaneous CHILLS & FEVER (with predominant chills) 2. Attacks UPPER BACK - occipital headache, neck and shoulder stiffness, shoulder pain (+ damp = muscle ache) GB 20 Cold Door 3. NO PERSPIRATION (Cold-stagnation of pores, block Wei Qi, no sweat) 4. Fluids: Thin and profuse - runny nose 5. Secretion: profuse, thin, clear or white, a lot of urine (not from over drinking), very loose stool 6. Aversion: to Cold! 7. Fever: low great
HEAT (as pathogenic factor/evil)
1. Thirst: causes thirst (cold drinks= Stomack fire) 2. Feeling hot - open window in winter 3. Mental restlessness, hyper active, insomnia, rapid excessive movement, agitation, delirium 4. Fluids; thick ;dark scanty urine 5. Bad smell: bead breath, smelly gasses etc. 6.Symptoms better with cold 7. Aggravate by heat 8. Yang pathogen: damaging to Yin entities 9. not really feverish just subjective feeling of heat 10. REDNESS anywhere on the body, red complexion
DIET (as Miscellaneous pathogenic factor/evil)
1. YIN OR YANG pathogen 2. Can fail to support Zhang Qi by not nourishing post heaven jing 3. org involved SP, ST, SI, LI, Liv 4. !!! Spleen root of Post-H, maintenance of SP depends of diat, Spleen needs heat, not cold food, Spleen craves sweats SPLEEN KILLERS: to raw, to cold, unclean foods overindulgence: carving for sweets or fatty alcohol or spicy/ fried food = damp heat HABITS DAMAGING ZANG FU: overeating or eating to fast irregular eating eating under emotional duress fasting for too long to much activity after eating
DRYNESS (as a pathogenic factor/evil)
1. Yang pathogen that reflects a stage of Yin deficiency disease = STAGE of Yin Deficiency 2. Dryness is not HEAT 3. Treatment: moisten dryness, nourish Yin/ Clear Heat 4. Most effected Lu and Kid 5. Product of heat or deficiency
LIVER WIND BLOOD VACUITY (DEFICIENCY)
1. cause by blood deficiency 2. not enough blood in the channels allows wind to flow in the empty spaces in the channels - wind goes to limbs 3. Vacuity pattern 4. Symptoms: twitches, itches, rushes changing location, twitching eyelids, shaking limbs, numbness, dry eyes, dry skin, pale complexion
JOY
1. to much scatters Heat Qi 2. Joylessness or inability to express joy is pathological 3. affects HEART
LIVER WIND HIGH HEAT
1. wind ignites already stagnant Liver 2. full Repletion (Excess) pattern 3. full Heat pattern 4. no underlying vacuity (deficiency) 5. Interior/ Heat/ Repletion 6. Symptoms: high fever, tetany, convulsion, meningitis e.g. pediatric febrile seizure
Flow: 2. Production and transportation of vital sbstances
Anything what interfere with flow and production of qi and blood cause disease- symptoms: shortness of breath, pain, headache, irregular menstruations.
Six Exogenous pathogenic factors (evils) WIND
Chief of 100 diseases Characterize by: sudden onset changes in location or symptomatology upper body chills and fever Catching cold when weather changes, Rhinoviruses
Pathogenic factors
Pathogenic factors: 1. Stand in opposition to Righteous (Zheng) Qi. 2. Can only be effected when Zheng Qi is weak. 3. Exuberance of pathogen leads to deterioration of Qi and vacuity of Vital substances and of Yin and Yang. 4. Nature of Pathogen dictates pathway of disease: Yin pathogen - attacks body Yang Yang pathogen - damages Yin
Six Exogenous pathogenic factors (evils)
climatic - wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, summer heat Attacks exterior, Lu the only organ involved in exterior pattern,
LIFESTYLE (as Miscellaneous pathogenic factor/evil)
creating disharmony destructive to Jing Qi and Shen OVERWORK: Physical damages Kid Mental Damages Sp impact on digestion OVERPLAYING Sexual excess: damage Kid Qi and Jing especially when weak, sick or fatigue not during menstruation - woman loses Jing Qi not excessive if don't have orgasm(Jing loss) symptoms: lower back pain, urinary problems, sx of weak Kid
Miscellaneous factors (evils)
diet, lifestyle, trauma, wrong treatment, phlegm disease, stress and environmental factors.
Seven Endogenous pathogenic factors (evils)
emotions - joy, anger, sadness (melancholy), grief, worry (pensiveness), fear, panic (fright) Attacks Interior, Erratic( powolny, nierownomierny) movement of Qi, Abnormal movement
STRESS and ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS (as Miscellaneous pathogenic factor/evil)
mot a traditional TCM concept but important in every day life
WRONG TREATMENT (as Miscellaneous pathogenic factor/evil)
np misapplication of herbal medicines iatrogenic
Heat make its way to the body
through Yin (coolant of the body) - body fluids
Cold makes its way to the body
trough Yang (Kid, Sp, Lu maintain body heat) - weakening consumption of Yang
