Achilles Tendon (not a muscle)

Tendons attach muscle to bone. The Achilles is the largest tendon in the body and connects the Gastrocnemius to the heel.

Gastrocnemius

Pulls the heel upward extending the foot downward (when a dancer points their toes). Provides the propelling force in running and jumping.

Soleus

Works with the Gastrocnemius (calf) muscle to push the foot downward. It is very important for maintaining balance while standing and walking.
