The Scientific Method
Variable
A factor that changes in an experiment in order to test a hypothesis. It is the factor being tested.
Scientific Method
A series of steps followed to solve problems.
Hypothesis
A testable idea or explanation that leads to scientific investigation.
Responding Variable
Also called the dependent variable. The factor that changes after the maipulated variable is changed.
Manipulated Variable
Also called the independent variable. The factor that is changed on purpose during an experiment.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment that tests only one factor at a time by using a comparison of a control group with an experimental group.
Scientific Method, Step 6
Analyze your data. Look over the data you have collected and make sure that you understand what happened.
Data
Any pieces of information acquired through observation or experimentation.
Scientific Method, Step 5
Collect data. Write down all the information that you find using your five senses.
Scientific Method, Step 7
Conclusion. State the answer to the question. Usually tells whether your hypothesis was true or false.
Conclusion
In an experiment, it is the answer to your question.
Inference
Opinions or educated guesses based on observations or prior knowledge.
Scientific Method, Step 4
Procedure/Experiment. List steps to follow to test your hypothesis.
Scientific Method, Step 2
Research to find out what is already known about the question.
Scientific Method, Step 3
State your hypothesis.
Scientific Method, Step 1
State your purpose, usually as a question.
Observation
The process of obtaining information by using the senses.
5 senses
Touch, taste, smell, hear, and see.
