James Madison

Some of the causes of the War

1. The war was caused by British impressment, attacks on American trade. 2. Britain supporting Native Americans attacks on American settlers in the Northwest. 3. Great Britain had violated American sovereignty by not surrendering Western land

Tecumseh and the Prophet

A Shawnee chief and his half-brother that sought to unite several tribes in Ohio and the Indiana territory against American settlers. Their deaths ended the hope of an Indian confederacy.

A national policy of avoiding involvement in world affairs

Nationalism

A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country.

Effects on the U.S.

Americans became more patriotic, made the country feel stronger, and proved that the U.S. would not let other countries bully them. American western expansion was guaranteed and Andrew Jackson became a national hero.

Battle of Tippecanoe

Battle between Americans and Native Americans. Tecumseh and the Prophet attempted to oppress white settlement in the West, but defeated by William Henry Harrison. Led to talk of Canadian invasion and served as a cause to the War of 1812.

Effects on Britain

Britain was not really affected. They did not lose any land but they did not get anything out of the war either.

Andrew Jackson

During the War of 1812, he was appointed a Major General and sent to New Orleans to prepare the city's defenses against an impending British attack. His army of Tennessee and Kentucky volunteers defeated an invading British force of 7500 men and forced the British to withdraw from the region. He becomes a war hero!

Battle of Baltimore

In the War of 1812, Americans survived British naval onslaught at Fort McHenry; Star Spangled Banner was written.

Impressment

Kidnapping people and forcing them to work in the British navy.

Effects on Native Americans

Native Americans lost more land to American settlers. There was no more protection for Native Americans. Native Americans would continue to lose more and more land, eventually being forced to move onto reservations.

Presidents wife, she had to flee the white house before they set it on fire; saved valuable papers including Washington's portrait

War Hawks

Southerners and Westerners who were eager for war with Britain. They had a strong sense of nationalism, and they wanted to takeover British land in North America and expand.

Burning of the White House

The British were trying to end the war so they attacked Washington, D.C. During the battle, the British burned down the White House but the president was safe.

Battle of New Orleans

The British were trying to take over New Orleans. (They wanted to hurt US trade.) The US won the battle. Over 1,781 British soldiers died in the battle and no more than 12 American soldiers fell.

Invasion of Canada

The U.S. tried to take over Canada but was stopped by the British Army. The British won the battle.

Treaty of Ghent

The treaty that ended the war between the U.S. and Britain. Nothing really changed in terms of control of land.
