Genesis 2:15

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it"

Genesis 1:26-28

(26)Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."(27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (28)And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

What are the theological differences between the 1st and 2nd creation accounts?

1st: Eloist account. More metaphysical(God created by his mere word) and cosmological(days) and theological(man is created). Birdseye view. Creates by mere Word in his image and likeness. Male and Female created at the same time. 2nd: Yahwist account. More psychological. Man's subjectivity. Original experiences. Creates from something. self-awareness etc. Man created then Woman.

Define the following terms as they apply to the theology of the body a)Spousal meaning of the body b) Communion of persons c) subjectivity

A)Spousal meaning of the Body: The ability of the body to express love or manifest the gift of whose body it is. B)Communion of persons: Sincere gift of self (persons giving a perfect gift of self). C) Subjectivity: Self-awareness and self-determination.

Genesis 4:1

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.

Genesis 2:16

And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden

Matthew 19:3-8

And the Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" (4)He answered, "have you not heard that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, (5)and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one.'? (6)So they are no longer two but one. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder." They said to him, (7)"Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?"(8) He said to them, "for your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so."

Genesis 2:25

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

What is "Knowledge"? What does it mean that Adam "knew" his wife, Eve? How do man and woman "know" each other?

Gen. 4:1 the marital act. The Human meaning of knowledge is Fatherhood and Motherhood. Knowledge conditions begetting. Knowledge refers to the other person and their subjectivity. To "know" someone from the Hebrew term "yada" means conjugal union or the conscious experience of the other person. Man and woman know each other through the experience of the other.

What is meant by "Beginning"? What did the Pharisees appeal to? Why does Jesus appeal to the beginning?

Genesis 19:3-8. The beginning means God's original intention for marriage. The Pharisees appealed to Moses and the old law. Jesus appeals to the beginning because God's intention for marriage was never divorce. Jesus is appealing to God the higher authority from the beginning. He said to them, "for your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning, it was not so." (Matthew 19:8)

Genesis 1:28

God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Summarize the main thesis statement of the Theology of the Body basing on what you have studied so far in your TOB class/readings

In TOB 19.4 JPII says that the body can make visible what is invisible, you can see God through the body. man participates in the mystery of Truth and Love and makes visible through his body the divine. The body has been created to transfer into the visible reality of the world the mystery hidden from eternity in God, and thus to be a sign of it.

A common adage goes "You cannot give what you do not have (Nemo dat quod non habet)." In reference to what you have so far studied in the Theology of the Body class, how does the quoted adage apply to spousal love? (i.e., how does it apply to the gift of self that persons make to each other in marriage and in other Christian vocations?

In spousal love, you give of yourself completely and so you must have total self-mastery and self-determination. You cannot give of yourself if you are not master of yourself.

Gaudium et Spes 24:3. (memorize)

Indeed, the Lord Jesus, when He prayed to the Father, "that all may be one. . . as we are one" (John 17:21-22) opened up vistas closed to human reason, for He implied a certain likeness between the union of the divine Persons, and the unity of God's sons in truth and charity. This likeness reveals that man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.(2)

Explain the 2 parts describing man in Gaudium et Spes 24:3. How does Aristotle's work on friendship help us to understand these two parts?

The 2 parts describing man in Gaudium et Spes 24:3 are that man is the only creature that God willed for itself which is a unity in truth and charity which means that man cannot be used as a means to an end. the second part is that man cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of self. Aristotle talks about man having Koinonia which is a communion of persons and benevolence which is willing the good of the other. These help us to understand Gaudium et Spes in the way that they show a gift of self and a willing of the good of the other in a sincere gift of self.

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper fit for him."

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

What is the cause of shame? Why does JP II call shame "a boundary experience"? Do you think it is possible for the historical man to return to the state of original innocence?

The cause of shame is original sin. It is an effect of the Fall. JPII calls shame a boundary experience because it shows the connection between the 2 states, thereby allowing us to go back to the threshold of the original experiences. man separated himself from his original innocence through original sin. He is able to approach the mystery of his original experiences through his Theological knowledge. He can experience the mystery of his original experiences by going back to the experience of his own guilt and sinfulness. We cannot completely return but we have echoes. Original innocence means no shame. Shame is fear in the presence of the other "I". Shame is the fear of the potential of being objectified.

Briefly describe the three historical experiences of the original "man" before the Fall. How are the three original experiences related to each other?

The three Historical Experiences of the Original man were Original Solitude, Original Unity, and Original Nakedness. Original solitude was when man was the only rational creature on earth and this leads to God seeing that it is not good that man should be alone(2:18) so he created a woman out of the rib of Adam as a helper. Adam and Eve then come together and become one flesh (Gen 2:23) and then there is unity. Unity is the fulfillment of masculinity and feminity coming together. Through Eves's body, Adam discovers his own humanity. Original nakedness is a part of original unity and embodies the idea of integral vision. They saw each other for who they were and did not use each other. They were both naked and not ashamed(Gen 2:25)

Genesis 3:7

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Genesis 2:23

Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."

Genesis 2:24

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Theology of the Body 19.4

Thus in this dimension of the gift of original innocence before the fall, a primordial sacrament is constituted, understood as a sign that efficaciously transmits in the visible world the invisible mystery hidden in God from eternity. And this is the mystery of Truth and Love, the mystery of Divine life, in which man really participates. In the history of man, it is original innocence that begins this participation and is also the source of original happiness. The sacrament, as a visible sign, is constituted with man, Inasmuch as he is a "body," through his "visible" masculinity and femininity. The body, in fact, and only the body, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine. It has been created to transfer into the visible reality of the world the mystery hidden from eternity in God, and thus to be a sign of it.
