Thigh Muscles
adductor magnus m.
originates at the inferior pubic ramus and ischial ramus, and inserts on the gluteal tuberosity/adductor tubercle of the femur, it adducts and medially rotate the thigh.
gracilis m.
originates at the inferior rami of the pubis and inserts on the tibia at the pes anserinus it adduct the thigh and flexes the leg at the knee. Part of the pes anserinus
semimembranosus m.
originates at the ischial tuberosity and inserts at the medial condyle of the tibia, it flexes and medially rotates the leg and extends and medially rotates the thigh.
semitendinosus m.
originates at the ischial tuberosity and inserts on the superior medial tibia it flexes and medially rotates the leg and extends and medially rotates the thigh. Part of the pes anserinus
obturator externus m.
originates at the obturator foramen, and inserts on the trochateric fossa of the femur it laterally rotates the thigh.
adductor longus m.
originates at the pubis inferior to the crest and inserts on the linea aspera of the femur, it adducts the thigh and medially rotates at the hip.
adductor brevis m.
originates at the pubis just inferior to the crest and inserts on the femur at the pectineal line and linea aspera. It adducts the thigh at the hip.
pectineus m.
originates at the superior pubic rami, and inserts at the pectineal line of the femur, it adducts and flexes the femur at the hip.
deep artery of the thigh aa.
originates from the femoral a. of the thigh on the lateral side and supplies the posteriorly and medially
great saphenous vein
originates from the medial side of the dorsal venous arch and ascends up the medial side of the leg knee and thigh to connect with the femoral vein.
obturator aa.
originates as a branch of the internal iliac artery and enters the medial compartment of the thigh through the obturator canal and supplies the medial thigh.
vastus lateralis m.
originates at the greater trochanter of the femur and inserts at the base of the petella/tibial tuberosity, it extends the leg at the knee.
menisci
Crescent-shaped fibrocartilage disks, two for each knee, that provide a concave surface into which the condyles of the femur fit.
synovial membrane
Lines inside of capsule and secretes fluid
Vastus intermedius m.
Originate on the shaft of femur, and inserts a the base of the petal/tibial tuberosity, it extends the leg at the knee.
sartorius m.
Originates at the ASIS and inserts on the medial surface of the tibia, it flexes, adducts and laterally rotates the thigh and flexes the leg at the knee. Part of the pea anserinus
rectus femoris m.
Originates at the anterior inferior iliac spine and from the ilium right above the acetatbulum , and inserts at the base of the petella to the tibial tuberosity, flexes the thigh and extends the leg at the knee.
illiacus m.
Originates at the iliac fossa, sacrum and inserts in the lesser trochanter. it flexes the thigh at the hip.
Vastus Medialis m.
Originates at the intertrochanteric line and inserts at the base of the petalla to the tibial tuberosity. Extends the leg at knee.
Psoas major m.
muscle of the anterior thigh originates at vertebrate TXII -LV and inserts on the lesser trochanter of the femur, flexes the thigh at the hip.
popliteal fossa
diamond shaped area of transition between the thigh and the leg, formed superiomedially by the semitendinous, and semimembranous muscles and superiolaterally by the biceps femoris, and inferiorly by the gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles.
petellar ligament
continuation of the quadriceps femoris that is attached above to the petella and below to the tibial tuberosity.
suprapetellar bursa
extension of the synovial membrane above the petella.
femoral n.
innervates anterior thigh muscles, illiacus, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, sartorius, and medially the pectineus m.
sciatic n.
innervates posterior thigh muscles biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus.
saphenous n.
innervates the medial side of the knee leg and foot skin.
obturator n.
innervates the medial thigh muscles gracilis, adductor longs, adductor brevis, adductor magnus, and obturator externus.
lateral circumflex femoral aa.
is a branch of the deep artery of the thigh and supplies the superior hip and anterior
fibrous membrane
is formed from tendons from the surrounding muscles and ligaments of the knee.
femoral aa.
is the continuation of the external iliac aa. it passes under the inguinal ligament and supplies the anterior thigh.
fibular collateral ligament
ligament attached superiorly to the lateral epicondyle of the femur and inferiorly to the fibular head.
tibial collateral ligament
ligament attached superiorly to the medial femoral epicondyle and inferiorly to the tibia.
anterior cruciate ligament
ligament that attaches to a facet on the anterior part of the intercondylar area and ascends posteriorly to attach to a facet on the at the back of the lateral wall of the intercondyle fossa of the femur.
posterior cruciate ligament
ligament that attaches to the posterior aspect of the intercondylar are of the tibia and ascends anteriorly to attach to the medial wall of the intercondylar fossa.
tibiofibular joint
pertaining to the joint between the tibia and fibula
subpopliteal recess
smaller of the two extensions of the synovial membrane of the knee that lies between the popliteus muscle and the lateral meniscus.
biceps femoris m.
the long head originates at the ischial tuberosity and the short head a the linea aspera, it inserts on the fibia and flexes the leg at the knee and laterally rotates the femur and thigh.
