nonbinary

folx who identify as having no gender, or a gender in-between (or beyond) being a man or a woman. It is a diverse category and not every nonbinary person feels the same way.

neurotypical

people with typical development and intellectual ability.

sexual orientation

social identity that corresponds with the gender you are attraced to

race

socially constructed term that divides folx up based on their skin color and physical charateristics; it is not based on scientific fact adn is not grounded in genetics.

transgender

someone whose gender identity differs from the gender they were assigned at birth

systemic

something that happens throughout a whole system (and institution) over the course of time

white supremacy

the belief that white people are superior to those who are Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other Folx of Global Majority because they are white.

privilege

the benefits, advantages, and power given due to the social identities shared with the dominant culture. Privileges are granted and favored by institutions and social norms that were created by those in the imaginary box.

taxonomy

the classification of organisms and systems in nature

Latinx

the general, gender-neutral term for folx who are from Latin American and of Latin American descent. Flox who are from countries and places that were once colonized by Span and Latin-based language countries are lumped into the term Latinx

gender

the social construction, or performance, of your role in society based on the dominant culture's creation of what is masculine & feminine. Your gender is not defined by the sex you were assigned at birth

opression

the systemic and systemic suppression of a group, or groups, by a group in power

neurodiverse

the term used to describe neurological differences ( like ADHD, autism, dyslexia, Tourette's syndrome): acknowledges that these differences are from genetic variations, are often not visible, and that folx who are neurodiverse are not sisck, badly behaved, or damaged.

ancestral trauma

the transmission of trauma from survivors to the next generation

inferior

to be made to feel and believe that you are less than someone, that you are not good enough

marginalized

to be on the outside of the imaginary box of the dominant culture and treated as if you are insignificant and infereior. Marginalization is the purposeful disempowerment of folx that denies access to resources and power.

superior

to believe you are better than someone else

assimilate

to take on the customs, mannerisms, and ideas of a dominant group in order to dfit in.

colonization

when a group takes control over another. Violince and manipulation are used to gain and maintain power and control over the land and resources.

complicity

when you go along with a harmful act. You are complicit when you go along with others who are committing an injustice

cisgender (cis)

when your personal identity and gender expression correspond with the sex you were assigned at birth.

ethnicity

your cultural heritage: languages, traditions, ancestral history. It is not the same as your race

nationality

your membership in a country where you were born and/or where your citizenship resides

bias

your personal preference for, or against, an individual or grop. It can interfere with your judgment.

gender identity

your personal sense of who you are; it may be different or the same as the sex you were assigned at birth

agency

your power to make effective change. It's your ability to make choices and decisions.
