Torsion

Loads caused by twisting in opposite directions from the opposite directions of a structure cause shear stress over the entire cross section of that structure.

Bending

Occurs in one of the following ways: When 2 force pairs act at opposite ends of a structure (4 Point); When 3 forces cause bending (3 Points) ; or when an already bowed structure is axially loaded.

Shearing

Occurs when equal but not directly opposite loads are applied to opposing surfaces, forcing those surfaces to move in a parallel directions relative to one another.

Compression

Produced by external loads applied toward one another on opposite surfaces in opposite directions. This shortens and widens a structure

Tension

The force that pulls or stretches tissue. This generates a response by an equal and opposite external loads that pull a structure apart.
