Effect of Title IX

It improved the sporting opportunities and resources available for women at both the high school level and at institutions of higher education. An increase in the salaries and other forms of compensation for administrators and coaches of women's teams. Although compensation still remains unequal, progress has been made.

Unintended Consequences

Many institutions claim to have found it increasingly difficult to work towards proportionality, maintain their football rosters, and at the same time attempt to contain costs. They cut non-revenue producing male sports. -Gymnastics -Swimming & diving -Soccer

Title IX, The Education Amendments of 1972

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is a form of prohibited sex discrimination under Title IX. There are two types: 1) Quid Pro Quo (This for that) 2) Hostile environment Sexual and/or romantic relationships between managers and their staff are not appropriate. Unequal power relations

Effect of Title IX

Title IX prohibited sex discrimination in educational institutions receiving federal funds from the United States government. It outlawed sex separate physical education classes and stated that schools had to provide either equal sport teams for girls or let the girls try out with the boys. However, schools were not required to sponsor coed teams in contact sports like football.

Quid Pro Quo (This for that)

Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994 (EADA)  Schools became obliged to divulge: (aka. make known private or sensitive information)

participation rates between women and men coaching salaries and expenses student aid operating expenses on an annual basis
