Key points

-Companies now more then ever need to innovate -Innovation and Emerging Technology introduce disruption into businesses and markets -New technologies requires new leadership skills -Emerging technologies

trend #5 empowered edge

Edge computing is a topology where information processing and content collection and delivery are placed closer to the sources of the information, with the idea that keeping traffic local will reduce latency. Currently, much of the focus of this technology is a result of the need for IoT systems to deliver disconnected or distributed capabilities into the embedded IoT world. Through 2028, Gartner expects a steady increase in the embedding of sensor, storage, compute and advanced AI capabilities in edge devices.

Trend #4 digital twins

-A digital twin is a digital representation that mirrors a real-life object, process or system. The idea of a digital twin is not new. -The focus today is on digital twins in the IoT, which could improve enterprise decision making by providing information on maintenance and reliability, insight into how a product could perform more effectively, data about new products and increased efficiency.

Trend #3 AI-driven development

-AI-driven development looks at tools, technologies and best practices for embedding AI into applications and using AI to create AI-powered tools for the development process. This trend is evolving along three dimensions: -The tools used to build AI-powered solutions are expanding from tools targeting data scientists to tools targeting the professional developer community. With these tools the professional developer can infuse AI powered capabilities and models into an application without involvement of a professional data scientist. -The tools used to build AI-powered solutions are being empowered with AI-driven capabilities that assist professional developers and automate tasks related to the development of AI-enhanced solutions. Augmented analytics, automated testing, automated code generation and automated solution development will speed the development process and empower a wider range of users to develop applications. -AI-enabled tools are evolving to being enhanced with business domain expertise and automating activities higher on the process stack (from general development to business solution design).

Trend #2 augmented analytics

-Data scientists now have increasing amounts of data to prepare, analyze and group — and from which to draw conclusions. Given the amount of data, exploring all possibilities becomes impossible. This means businesses can miss key insights from hypotheses the data scientists don't have the capacity to explore. -Augmented analytics represents a third major wave for data and analytics capabilities as data scientists use automated algorithms to explore more hypotheses. Data science and machine learning platforms have transformed how businesses generate analytics insight. -"By 2020, more than 40% of data science tasks will be automated" -Augmented analytics identify hidden patterns while removing the personal bias. -Through 2020, the number of citizen data scientists will grow five times faster than professional data scientists. Between citizen data scientists and augmented analytics, data insights will be more broadly available across the business, including analysts, decision makers and operational workers.

5G (future)

5G has the potential to join a very exclusive club―the handful of technologies throughout history that transform industries across every sector of the economy ... redefining work, elevating living standards, and having a profound and sustained impact on our global economic growth.

trend #8 smart spaces

A smart space is a physical or digital environment in which humans and technology-enabled systems interact in increasingly open, connected, coordinated and intelligent ecosystems. Smart spaces are evolving alone five key dimensions: Openness, connectedness, coordination, intelligence and scope. Essentially, smart spaces are developing as individual technologies emerge from silos to work together to create a collaborative and interaction environment. The most extensive example of smart spaces is smart cities, where areas that combine business, residential and industrial communities are being designed using intelligent urban ecosystem frameworks, with all sectors linking to social and community collaboration.

disruptive technologies

Advances that will transform life, business, and the global economy, could drive massive transformations in the coming years. Not every emerging technology will alter the business or social landscape—but some truly do have the potential to disrupt the status quo, alter the way people live and work. If business and government leaders wait until distributive technologies are exerting their full influence on the economy, it will be too late to capture the benefits or react to the consequences. AI, smart devices, IoT, VR/AR, blockchain, quantum computing, 5G

increased cybersecurity threats will need additional resources (future)

As IT organizations embrace public cloud environments, the threat of cyberattacks and malicious attempts is a growing phenomenon. A labor gap still exists between the industry's needs and what can be achieved with the available workforce. The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) claims that as cloud and mobility adoption uncovers new threats, there remains an IT security skills gap. As cloud increasingly becomes a part of every IT environment, 2019 will be a key year for elevating the workforce, educating new talent and making the right moves to face the cyber challenge.

organizations will have to master their hybrid cloud strategies (future)

As cloud adoption picks up substantial speed, the current era of coexistence between traditional and emerging technologies will face increasing operational business challenges. IT organizations will respond by focusing on creating a clear hybrid approach (current, cloud and multicloud) that ties together current applications with the latest technologies and network changes. Organizations that fail to adapt to the hybrid environment will be prevented from adopting cloud technologies at the right speed, which will eventually hinder their ability to achieve business objectives

AI + Medical devices = predicative

As well as making implantable medical devices more secure, EQS-HBC also offers lower energy consumption. That means EQS-HBC has a practical advantage over wireless body networks: less energy demand means longer battery life for any implantable devices using the network. And a longer battery life means such devices won't need replacing as often. The system uses frequencies under 1Mhz, and transmits the signal through the epidermal layers of the skin, which are picked up by on-body receivers, which could include devices such as health-tracking bands, watches, or other wearables. The researchers envisage EQS-HBC gathering data from any number of sensors within the body, from head to feet, and feeding that back to healthcare systems, either within a band itself or in the cloud. Ultimately the technology could be used for predicative medicine, scanning data from the sensors for anomalies that could be suggestive of the first signs of disease that may yet be undetectable to the wearer. "We are living in the age of AI, where AI is bringing benefits through data. For the application of AI in healthcare, it needs a continuous stream of data from many, many sensors around our body. Once this data is gathered in a hub, like a watch, or in the cloud, with not only my data, but my data compared with an anonymized pool of other people's data, that really brings the power of analysis

trend #7 blockchain

Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger, an expanding chronologically ordered list of cryptographically signed, irrevocable transactional records shared by all participants in a network. Blockchain allows companies to trace a transaction and work with untrusted parties without the need for a centralized party (i.e., a bank). This greatly reduces business friction and has applications that began in finance, but have expanded to government, healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain and others. Blockchain could potentially lower costs, reduce transaction settlement times and improve cash flow. The technology has also given way to a host of blockchain-inspired solutions that utilize some of the benefits and parts of blockchain.

open source will open doors to collaborative working (future)

Collaborative working, joint projects between two or more organizations, will become increasingly common in 2019. With the launch of open-source frameworks bridging the divide between modern applications and aged mainframe systems. Opening up these platforms will place less importance on its limitations, and more focus on what it can help to accomplish. Increasing accessibility will allow developers to work on unfamiliar platforms using familiar languages such as Python, PHP, Java and Git, which could provide an opportunity for the tech industry to overcome skills gaps.

trend #9 digital ethics and privacy

Consumers are increasingly concerned with how it's being used by public and private entities. Enterprises that don't pay attention are at risk of consumer backlash. Conversations regarding privacy must be grounded in ethics and trust. The conversation should move from "Are we compliant?" toward "Are we doing the right thing?" Governments are increasingly planning or passing regulations.

New leadership skills

Digital transformation - Today, we refer to the process of using emerging technologies to reimagine an entire business as digital transformation. Simply put, digital transformation is the process of future-proofing one's organization. It typically begins with leaders and strategists defining new ambitions—often in the broadest of terms and grandest of visions. But digital transformation can and should be just as concerned with modest and immediate ambitions as it is with broadly reimagining the future. By adopting a strategy of putting smaller, more tightly scoped offerings into the market quickly and successfully, organizations can incrementally achieve an end-state business ambition. Intelligent interfaces, Reimagining the way humans, machines, and data interact - In an emerging technology trend that could redraw—or even erase—boundaries between humans and computers, a new breed of intelligent interfaces is turning the farfetched into reality. These interfaces combine the latest in human-centered design techniques with leading-edge technologies such as machine learning, robotics, IoT, contextual awareness, and advanced augmented reality and virtual reality. Working in concert, these techniques and capabilities are transforming the way we engage with machines, data, and each other.

innovation as a survival skill

Every organization has its own priorities, goals, and issues to balance. Innovative approaches to tomorrow's challenges are a differentiator between those companies that lead and those who chase. Innovation is quickly becoming a survival skill.

Why innovation matter for survival

Increasing Competition: competitors are faster, smarter, many startups, innovation cycle shorter Increasing Globalization: the world is shrinking, a foreign company has access to your customers. Increasing Consumer Expectations: Consumers want companies that will make their lives better Advancing Technology: Startups, small and mid-size companies are becoming more sophisticated. Changing workforce demographics: More diverse. Talent shortages.

Human Body Hacker-Proof Network

Increasing numbers of implantable medical devices are now gaining internet connectivity, giving doctors the ability to monitor patients health remotely, and even update the devices to tweak a treatment plan. -Unfortunately, that flexibility offers a way for hackers to hijack that hardware, and even potentially make changes to the way the devices work. While so far no attacks have been successful, proof-of-concept attacks exist. -In future, as connected medical devices not only monitor health condition but also dispense drugs and actively treat patients, keeping health hardware locked down is going to take on greater significance not only for tech companies, but for the individuals whose life might depend on them. -Researchers have come up with a new approach to protecting implantable medical devices. Use the device-wearer themselves as a conduit, routing the signal through their body -- which dramatically cuts the distance over which any data can be read. -The researchers have created Electro-Quasistatic Human Body Communication (EQS-HBC) which uses low-frequency, carrier-less broadband transmission, and so keeps the signal almost entirely within the human body. -"From the security perspective of EQS-HBC, if it can confine the data transmission within the human body, it would enable a form of physical layer security, which is presently non-existent in WBANs [wireless body area networks]. Thus, the data transmission would be fully secure from an external malicious attacker. The researchers write -- anyone who wanted to hack your pacemaker would have to be touching you first.

legacy systems to get an update (future)

Many businesses still rely on outdated legacy systems, held together by heavy spending on mainframe maintenance. In 2019, they will begin to realize that that money could be better spent on modernizing legacy systems and implementing new technologies. Next year won't be the end of legacy systems, but it will be the start of true legacy innovation.

Deloitte trends

Nine forces—digital experience, cloud, analytics, blockchain, cognitive, digital reality, business of technology, core modernization, and cyber—are no longer particularly novel doesn't mean they are not vitally important. It is remarkable how quickly organizations across sectors and regions navigated through the so what and into the now what for these trends and went on to successfully traverse the new digital landscape. In fact, one of the most pressing challenges technology and business leaders face is how to capitalize on the value these macro forces can deliver collectively. The journey to fully autonomous artificial intelligence is part of a growing trend in which companies transform themselves into AI-fueled organizations where AI is an integral component of corporate strategy. three system models that are currently in play: -Cloud-native. Given AI's ascendance in the enterprise technology arena, it is conceivable that an AI-as-a-service platform could be the next big operating system. -Package-adjunct. In an alternative approach to the cloud-native model, several vendors are investing in AI platforms as complements to their core functionality. -Open-algorithm. Numerous startups are developing AI solutions to meet specific business needs, use cases, and verticalized issues.

trend #10 quantum computing

Quantum computing is a type of nonclassical computing that is based on the quantum state of subatomic particles that represent information as elements denoted as quantum bits or "qubits." Quantum computers are an exponentially scalable and highly parallel computing model. Quantum computers--Rather than the 0s and 1s of standard computing, quantum uses algorithms that recast problems in quantum-amenable forms. Quantum theory permits messaging without worries about eavesdroppers. Signals cannot be intercepted or duplicated. That has obvious appeal to companies and governments the world over. A way to imagine the difference between traditional and quantum computers is to imagine a giant library of books. While a classic computer would read every book in a library in a linear fashion, a quantum computer would read all the books simultaneously. Quantum computers are able to theoretically work on millions of computations at once. Quantum computing commercially available, affordable and reliable service would transform some industries.

Gartner's top predictions for 2019

The Gartner Top 10 Strategic Technology trends highlight changing or not yet widely recognized trends that will impact and transform industries through 2023. Blockchain, quantum computing, augmented analytics and artificial intelligence will drive disruption and new business models. AI-driven robots are just one example of "autonomous things," one of the Gartner Top 10 strategic technologies for 2019 with the potential to drive significant disruption and deliver opportunity over the next five years. "The future will be characterized by smart devices delivering increasingly insightful digital services everywhere,". "We call this the intelligent digital mesh." Intelligent: How AI is in virtually every existing technology, and creating entirely new categories . Digital: Blending the digital and physical worlds to create an immersive world. rapid maturing of drone technology

The company also recently won approval for drone deliveries from regulators in Australia, where it has conducted extensive testing. Wing provided extensive documentation including records of thousands of safe flights conducted in Australia in recent years. The FAA's approval demonstrates the rapid maturation of drone technology. It shows these devices can be value-added in our communities, they can be a faster, cleaner, less expensive way to transport things while still adding to the safety of society. Other drone companies applying for FAA approvals should be able to move more quickly now that the agency and Wing have worked through the issues of what rules should apply to drone operators and which ones should not. Wing plans to begin deliveries in the Blacksburg and Christiansburg areas of Virginia. The company has been conducting research at nearby Virginia Tech. Unlike Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Air, another would-be drone delivery company, Wing will sell items from local merchants. Drone regulations still don't permit most flights over crowds and urban areas, limiting where Wing can operate.

innovation

The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need. Business innovation is an organization's process for introducing new ideas, workflows, methodologies, services or products

trend #6 immersive technologies

Through 2028, conversational platforms, which change how users interact with the world, and technologies such as augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR), which change how users perceive the world, will lead to a new immersive experience. The future of conversational platforms, which range from virtual personal assistants to chatbots, will incorporate expanded sensory channels that will allow the platform to detect emotions based on facial expressions, and they will become more conversational in interactions. Eventually, the technology and thinking will shift to a point where the experience will connect people with hundreds of edge devices ranging from computers to cars.

Trend #1 autonomous things

Whether it's cars, robots or agriculture, autonomous things use AI to perform tasks traditionally done by humans. The sophistication of the intelligence varies, but all autonomous things use AI to interact more naturally with their environments. -Autonomous things exist across five types: Robotics; Vehicles; Drones; Appliances; Agents -Those five types occupy four environments: Sea, land, air and digital. They all operate with varying degrees of capability, coordination and intelligence. -This paints a broad picture of potential applications, and virtually every application, service and IoT object will incorporate some form of AI to automate or augment processes or human actions. -AI-driven autonomous are best used for narrowly defined purposes.

wing certified drones in the US

Wing (an Alphabet / Google company) achieved a significant milestone last week, becoming the first drone delivery company to receive Air Carrier Certification from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). -Air Carrier Certification means that Wing can begin a commercial service delivering goods from local businesses to homes in the United States. -This is an important step for the FAA and the drone industry in the United States; the result of years of work to safely integrate drones into the national airspace. -"This is an important step forward for the safe testing and integration of drones into our economy" said U.S. Secretary of Transportation. -For communities across the country, this presents new opportunities. Goods like medicine or food can now be delivered faster by drone. -Air delivery also provides greater autonomy to those who need assistance with mobility. -Wing has worked for six years to build a small, lightweight aircraft and navigational system that can safely deliver small packages on demand to specific destinations in only a few minutes. -Wing's drone, a hybrid between a helicopter and plane, is able to lift off vertically and fly horizontally at high speeds. It carries packages in its belly, lowering them to people's yards with a tether while it hovers a safe distance overhead.
