Topic 6 (generators and motors)
The strength of an electromagnet is affected by:
1. Type and size of core 2. Strength and current 3. Number of coils
Split ring Commutator
A split ring device called a commutator is used to reverse the current at the point.
electric generator
Device that converts mechanical energy (energy of motion) into electric energy.
Who discovered electromagnetic induction
Micheal Faraday and Joseph Henry in 1831.
Who introduced the science terms "ions" "electrode" "cathode" and "anode"
Micheal Faraday introduced these terms and the lines of magnetic force.
AC Generator
Most common type. The electricity produced by this type of generator is called alternating current. How they work is that in large AC Generators many loops of wire are wrapped around a large iron core. Massive coils of wire rotating in huge generators can produce enough electricity to power an entire city.
Difference between AC and DC
Some motors run on direct current (DC), it is direct because the electricity flows in one direction. Alternating current (AC) flows back and forth 60 times per second.
What is the Farad
The farad is the unit got measuring stored electric charge, and was named after Micheal Faraday
Electromagnets
When a soft iron core is inserted into a coil of wire and a current is passed through the wire, a very strong temporary magnet is produced.
Hans Christian Oersted
found that the current created a magnetic field around the wire. (The amount of needle deflection depended on how much electric current was flowing in the wire.
An electric motor and _______ are constructed in the same way.
generator. Instead of producing electricity, it uses electrical energy to make a wire coil spin in between the poles of a magnet. Opposite poles attract and like poles repel. (ALL ELECTRIC MOTORS OPERATE IN THIS PRINCIPLE).
DC generator
much same as a DC motor, and is often called dynamo. How it works is that the spinning armature produces the electricity (if electricity is passed through a DC generator it will spin like a motor). The armature is connected to a split ring commutator which enables DC generator to send a current through a circuit in one direction. Referred to as a direct current.
Motor
producing motion or action
Armature
the rotating coil or coils of a dynamo or electric motor.
