Acid-Base reaction

Some people separate from the double reaction type the reaction of an acid with a base. Its really a double replacement but is one where the products are always a salt and water. HA + BOH -> BA + Hv2O

Single Replacement Reaction

In this reaction (also called single displacement), one element is displaced from its compound by another alement. They have the general form as follows. A + BX -> AX + B Y + BX -> BY + X

Combustion Reaction

In this reaction a substance combines with oxygen, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of light and heat. Combustion of organic compounds (carbon and hydrogen containing molecules) produces COv2 and Hv2O Combustion (burning) of propane (usual fuel for backyard grills) Cv3Hv8 + 5Ov2 -> 3COv2 + 4Hv2O

Double Replacement Reaction

In this reaction, (also called double displacement) or ionic reaction, ions in solution exchange places and combine to form a product that leaves the reaction. A product must be formed that separates from the solution such as a solid precipitate or an insoluble or slightly soluble gas or a new molecular species. Double replacement reactions have the general form. AX + BY -> AY + BX

Decomposition Reaction

In this reaction, a single compound undergoes a reaction that produces two or more simpler substances. This type of reactions are the opposite of synthesis reactions and have the general equation. AX -> A + X

Synthesis Reaction

In this reaction, two or more substances combine to form a new, more complex compound. This type of reaction is represented by the following general equation. A + X -> AX
