However, some elements pleased both regions. An example of this is popular soverignty, where the population of a territory could vote for or against slavery. Northerners were also glad the federal government paid Texas money to surrender its claim to New Mexico, because it limited slavery in Texas within its current boarders. Southerners were glad that the money would help defray Texas's expenses and debts from the war with Mexico.

Additionally, African Americans are citizens of the US, and previous laws had recognized them as such.
