What is moral value and what does it reveal about the nature of the person?
What does moral value reveal about the nature of a person?
1.) they have an indespensability- if you lack moral goodness, you're a failure of a person 2.) it is better to suffer injustice than to commit it because suffering of injustice affects the innermost center so it's the worst of all evil 3.) there is a connection between the person and the moral agent
Moral goodness vs. moral values
Moral goodness: what gets engendered in me when I give a due response to moral value Moral values: points of view from which one looks at moral goodness (ex. faithfulness, reverence, justice, gratitude, etc.)
5 points for the nature of moral values/goodness:
1.) the good will is not good because of it's effects (it has splendor in and of itself) 2.) a morally good will is good without qualification 3.) moral badness deserves punishment, moral goodness deserves reward 4.) moral sphere/realm is absolute; if something is wrong, it's absolutely wrong 5.) religious dimension of moral value- there are lots of things whose meaning is limited to the world, but this is not true for morality
