In general, though, both physics and chemistry are about the process of discovering the patterns and rules of the natural world. In fact, this is the purpose of all branches of science. As our scientific understanding increases, descriptions of these patterns and rules must often be modified.

*As a result, science as a field of study is continually evolving. What was believed to be true yesterday may be disproved tomorrow. New methods and new technologies often drive the change. *Sometimes, even lucky accidents lead to important scientific discoveries.

In the 1600s scholars began approaching the study of problems in an increasingly systematic way. Academics began to require physical evidence and measurements to prove that an argument concerning the nature of things was actually true. Gradually, a more rigorous method of investigation laid the foundation for modern science.

*Until the 1600s, people who investigated problems related to our understanding of the natural world were called Philosophers. *A scientific theory is supported by evidence , can evolve over time & is a guess.

What areas of the work force can science be applied to? Science can be applied to 1. Government Regulation 2. Healthcare 3. Environmental Engineering

A chemist is likely to do which of the following? 1. To analyze the ingredients in ice cream. 2. To determine how to separate gasoline from other substances in petroleum.

Chemistry-The study of the structure, properties, and interactions of materials and the changes they undergo. Physics-The study of matter and energy and how they interact science the systematic study and analysis of facts.

BRANCHES OF SCIENCE There are many different branches of science, but they can generally be divided into three main categories. Listed Below. *Life Sciences *Earth Sciences *Physical Sciences

Earth sciences, such as geology and astronomy, are the study of the earth and space.

Geology belongs to which main category of science? Earth Science

The physical sciences, which include physics and chemistry, investigate matter and energy. The two main branches of physical science are physics and chemistry.

* Physics is the study of basic components like matter, motion, forces, heat, and energy, and how they interact. *Chemistry also involves the study of matter and deals with the properties and structure of materials, as well as ways in which those materials interact and the changes they undergo.

The life sciences, such as biology and anatomy, deal with living things.

*For example, in studying the human body, a doctor often relies on knowledge obtained from both life science and physical science.
