What the brain imaging does
How does a TMS work?
An electromagnetic coil is held against patient's scalp that emits powerful magnetic pulses to alter brain activity. Uses fast/powerful magnetic field to disrupt brain activity in a specific region
What does an MRI do best?
Anatomical view of brain in different dimensions
How does fMRI work?
By detecting changes in blood oxygenation. When an area of the brain is more active, it consumes more oxygen and to meet this demand blood flow is directed here
How does a PET scan work?
Detects radioactive material injected into the blood
What does a PET scan do best?
Images or brain activity and function (shows glucose and metabolism)
How does an EEG work?
Place electrodes on scalp, when neurons fire they produce electrical fields which are recorded as brain waves.
How does a CAT/CT scan work?
Series of X-Ray beams pass through the brain
What does a CAT/CT scan do best?
Show brain function (Diagnose muscle and bone disorders, such as bone tumors and fractures)
What does a TMS do best?
Shows is brain is relevent w/ tasks (helps with depression)
What does an fMRI do best?
detects changes in blood flow, anatomical and functional view
What does EEG do best?
read brain in different behavioral and cognitive states
How does an MRI work?
the person's head is put in a strong magnetic field, which aligns the spinning atoms of brain molecules. Then, a radio-wave pulse momentarily disorients the atoms. When the atoms return to their normal spin, they emit signals that provide a detailed picture of soft tissues, including the brain. Uses detection of radio-frequency signals
