1918 Influenza
An awful epidemic that nobody knew how to stop. Caused many deaths, but has never shown up again. No one knew how to control it.
Great Migration
Many African-Americans moved from the South to the Northeast and Northwest. They did not want to stay in the South any longer due to their new found freedom.
Propaganda
a form of communication that is aimed towards influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of the story.
Victory Garden
used to help the Food Administration act grow food.
George Creel
was an investigative journalist, a politician, and, most famously, the head of the United States Committee on Public Information, a propaganda organization created by President Woodrow Wilson.
Schenck v. United States
Schenck was a journalist who was degrading the war and talking about how awful the United States was and the war. He was discouraging people. He was arrested for treason, but said it was freedom of speech. The supreme court ruled in the US Favor, and he was put in prison.
War Industries Board (WIB)
The War Industries Board (WIB) was a United States government agency established on July 28, 1917, during World War I, to coordinate the purchase of war supplies.
Committee on Public Information
They tried to popularize the war so people would join.
Food Administration
Tried to convince people to save food and eat less because the men and women fighting for the country needed it more.
Bernard M. Baruch
advise president Woodrow Wilson on national defense and terms of peace. He served on the Advisory Commission to the Council of National Defense and, in 1918, became the chairman of the new War Industries Board.
Espionage and Sedition Act
it prohibited anyone from interfering with the war or military affairs.
Herbert Hoover
lead the Food Administration.
