Britain and France had expanded over a lot of continents. Britain extended over five continents and France covered a large part of Africa. When Britain and France started to "own"/influence countries and continents Germany got jealous. German entered "owning" other things late and only had a small influence.

For Great Britain it was a positive effect and they could transport goods to their allies. When the U.S. entered the war it was good for their allies.

Example: in war, if in debt. Imperialism: when a country takes over new lands and makes them subject to their rule. Nationalism: to be a strong supporter of rights and interest of a country.

Why was Nationalism an important factor?

Nationalism was an important factor because the Congress of Vienna tried to help sort out problems with Europe. Delegates from Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia decided to make a new Europe that left Italy and Germany as two different states. Some strong elements lead to the reunification of Italy in 1861 and Germany ten years later.

Who was in the Triple Entente and who was a part of the Central Powers?

Russia, Great Britain, France were part of the Triple Entente. Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria- Hungary, Bulgaria.

Why did Germans attack the Lusitania?

The German's attacked the Lusitania because they found out that it was carrying 173 tons of war munitions. So Germany decided to sink the Lusitania because it would be used against them.

The German's started creating their own battleships after Britain was the beginning of battleships. Von Schlieffen, a German drew a plan of action that involved attacking France though Belgium if Russia ever tried to attack Germany.

What was the Zimmerman Telegram? What affect did it have?

The Zimmerman Telegram was when a German secretary, Arthur Zimmerman, telegrammed the ambassador of Mexico stating that there should be a Mexican-German alliance. This would conclude in case of a war between the United States and Germany. The affect was that the U.S. decided to start arming its ships against any possible German attacks. The President Woodrow Wilson authorized the State Department to make the telegram public.

What is the "Spark" that started World War I?

The main "Spark" that started WWI was the assassination of the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on June 28, 1914.

What was the United States stance on WWI when it erupted?

When a German U-boat sank the RMS Lusitania on route from New York to Liverpool, New England there were 1,900 passengers. In those 1,900 passengers 120 American's were on the Lusitania. The United States was isolated and they didn't want any part.
