Function

A relationship where every input value (x) has one and ONLY one output value (y) X does not repeat!

Line

Graph of a linear function

Parabola

Graph of a quadratic function

Zero Slope

Horizontal Line

Domain

Set of all input (x) values you can plug into a function

Range

Set of all output (y) values you can plug into a function

Slope

Steepness of a line

Discrete Graph

The graph composed of isolated (only) points.

Axis of symmetry

The line that divides a parabola into two matching halves

Positive Correlation

The relationship between two sets of data in which both sets of data increase together.

Negative Correlation

The relationship between two sets of data, in which one set of data decreases as the other set of data increases.

x-intercept

The x coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the x-axis.

y-intercept

The y coordinate of a point where the graph crosses the y-axis.

Maximum

The y coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that opens downward (highest value).

Minimum

The y coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that opens upward (lowest value).

No Correlation

There does not appear to be a relationship between two sets of data

Linear Parent Function

y=x

Quadratic Parent Function

y=x^2

Quadratic Function

A function of the form y=ax^2+bx+c. Shape is a parabola (U-shaped curve) that opens up or down.

Continuous graph

A graph that is not broken

Root

A solution of a quadratic equation also called zero and x-intercept.

Solutions

Also called roots, zeros or x-intercepts

Linear equation

An equation whose graph forms a straight line.

Zero

An x-intercept of the graph of a function also called a solution or root.

Solution of system of linear equations

Any ordered pair in a system that makes all the equations true.

Function notation

To write a rule by using the symbol f(x) in place of y

Rate of change

Used to describe the measurement of the steepness of a straight line.

Undefined Slope

Vertical Line

Negative Slope

When a line decreases

Positive Slope

When a line increases
