Political Socialization

The process through which individuals in a society acquire political attitudes, views, and knowledge, based on the inputs from family, schools, media and others.

Ideology (political)

a coherent set of beliefs about politics, public policy, and public purpose, which helps give meaning to political events

political participation

activities which citizens engage to influence the selections of leaders and/or policies they pursue Ex: voting, writing council men

citizen's belief that he or she can understand and influence political affairs

conducted by campaign and media to follow changes in attitudes and revise campaign

benchmark poll

conducted by candidates for public office to gather base line attitudes and design campaign

Random Sample

key technique employed by survey researchers which operates on the principle that everyone should have an equal probability of being selected for the sample

one of the president's top assistants who is in charge of media relations on the daily basis and usually holds press conferences

the AP has people all over the world covering all kinds of stuff. wire service if the company joins the AP gets access to all the info and stories

Political Culture

the overall set of values widely shared within a society Ex: ethnic groups agree with equality

Gender Gap

the regular pattern in which women are more likely to support Democrats in part because they tend to be less conservative than men and more likely to support spending on social services and to oppose higher levels of military spending

Split ticket voting

voting for candidates from different parties on the same ballot

Straight ticket voting

voting for the same party on the ballot
