he meant that Mexico will ruin us because of the ugly heritage of an embittered slavery dispute. And yes I do think he was accurate because Mexicans could later take some satisfaction in knowing that the territory wrenched from them had proved to be a venomous apple that could be well called Santa Anna.

Polk's claim in his war message was "American Blood upon American Soil." Abraham Lincoln disputed it by launching the spots resolutions. The spots resolution requested Polk to provide Congress with the exact location (spot) where the blood was split on American soil.
