What term is thought to be first used for the first time with Mark's Gospel? How was it used before Mark's writing and how does it change after Mark used it?

"Gospels" was used with more than passion week and resurrection/ used for jesus' ministry

Jesus calls twelve disciples, and gives them authority to cast out unclean spirits and preach the kingdom of God (6:7, 12), effectively becoming extensions of Jesus' ministry. What might a disciple in this situation think being a disciple is about?

A disciple might think that it is about serving Jesus and not God and it's about expelling unclean spirits and not about trusting in God Verses are exceptions: acting like Jesus & preaching. Irony: disciples were supposed to be THE insiders but they're the biggest outsiders

Who is thought to be the author of the Gospel of Mark? What evidence do we have to suggest this viewpoint?

A guy named Mark wrote it and he had accompanied Peter and John on their first missionary journey.

Why did he tell them not to proclaim who he was?

Because they wouldn't understand since Jesus wanted to come as a suffering servant, and they only knew the messiah as a conquering king

What does it mean to say that Jesus's messiahship cannot be understood apart from the cross?

By being a suffering servant/ not a conquering king

Mark 14-15 is the passion narrative. During their last meal together (Passover, and Last Supper), what does Jesus predict the disciples will do (particularly Judas and Peter)? How might this relate to Mark's audience?

During Passover, Jesus predicts that one of his disciples will betray him. Right before, Judas goes in front of the chief priests to betray him for money. Jesus also predicts that Mark will lie n it's something about a crow cawing 3 times n him lying 3 times. Mark writes to a Roman audience, maybe this signifies that the Jewish are ones who would betray their own? <- i'm not sure lol

The centurion at Jesus' crucifixion (15:39) recognizes that Jesus was the Son of God. On what does the centurion base his confession (read the verse carefully). The confession was ironic in that the centurion recognizes who Jesus is, when the disciples did not. What other examples within the narrative can you provide where minor characters (those who Jesus encounters once) exhibit greater faith than the disciples. Why do you think the Evangelist portrays the disciples in this way?

END W EMPTY TOMB MARK WANTS U TO READ IT AGAIN

What term is used to frame the Gospel of Mark? How does this assist the reader?

God's son- framed it

In 9:2-13, what event happens in the narrative? Who is present during this event?

In Mark 9:2-13, Jesus has the transfiguration where he takes Peter, James, and John and leads them to a mountain. He then transfigures in front of them, sparkling white and Elijah and Moses appear. Then a voice comes from the clouds saying, "This is my Son, the Beloved, listen to him!". On their way down, Jesus tells them not to tell anyone yet.

Explain the concept of insiders vs. outsiders.

Insiders know that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God all throughout the book and we, the readers, are the insiders because it is stated that Jesus is God's son in the beginning and end of Mark. The disciples are the outsiders because they never fully grasp that Jesus is the Son of God and even though they are the closest to Jesus, they're still the farthest away.

When was it written? What major events were happening when he wrote this Gospel? How have scholars determined that this date is appropriate?

It was written from 67-70 CE and a war between the Jewish ppl and Romans was happening

Trace the Gospel of Mark geographically. In other words, where does Jesus begin his ministry and where does it end? In what activities does Jesus engaged in these locations?

Jesus begins by going north proving himself as a messiah by doing miracles and he get's baptized and tempted by satan, he's letting people know who he is. Jesus then asks his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" (8:29) and Peter said that he is the messiah (the northern most point). Jesus begins to travel to Jerusalem, back down south, and begins his suffering servant and discipleship-ness.

In 8:27-30, after Peter's rebuke, why does Jesus call Peter "Satan"?

Jesus calls Peter Satan because Peter can't comprehend that Jesus will suffer and die and that represent Satan because of the earthly view. Peter is just thinking about man and not about God and his plan.

Why, ultimately, is Jesus arrested? What crime is He convicted of committing?

Jesus is arrested for blasphemy

In Mark 4, why does Jesus say he speaks in parables? To whom does he explain the parables and why? Why is this ironic?

Jesus speaks in parables because they are able to understand it, everyone except for the disciples. Jesus has to explain the parables to his disciples because they don't grasp and understand what Jesus is saying, which is ironic because the disciples are supposed to be the closest to Jesus and understand him the most.

What literary techniques does Mark use to give interpretation to certain situations?

Literary intercalation- introducing a new story in the middle of another

How does the Gospel of Mark end (the original ending)? Why might the Evangelist have ended the Gospel in this manner?

Mark ends with the ascension of Jesus. He sits at the right hand of God, and the disciples went out to proclaim the word of God still, while God helped them. These show a continuation that as of now, people who believe should evangelize about God and tell others about him.

What term was used for Jesus telling people and unclean spirits to not talk about his identity?

Messianic secret - Bc ppl in israel knew him as a conquering king and not.a suffering servant

In Mark 8:27-30, Jesus interrogates the disciples about His identity. Peter ultimately answers, "You are the Messiah." Jesus sternly tells the disciples not to tell anyone about His identity. Jesus then makes His first passion prediction, after which Peter rebukes Jesus. Why does Peter rebuke Jesus? On what is Peter basing his confession of Jesus as Messiah?

Peter rebukes Jesus because he knows the messiah as a conquering king and Jesus says he's going to suffer. Peter is basing his confession off of his version of messiah.

To whom was the Gospel of Mark written?

The Romans - everything happened immediately and it omitted everything not meaningful to gentiles

What are the titles that were presented in class to describe the first and second halves of the Gospel of Mark?

The first half- preaching + the kingdom of God/baptism & temptation (proving messiah) Second half- suffering servant & discipleship

What story begins Mark's Gospel? How does Mark's Gospel end? What major events are not recorded in Mark's Gospel that are recorded in the other Gospels?

The story of John the baptist begins Mark and ends with Jesus's ascension (where he's not in the tomb and the guy tells the women to tell Jesus's disciples and peter that Jesus will meet them at Galilee, but they didn't tell anyone)

In 1:16-8:26, describe how the following groups respond to Jesus: a) the unclean spirits, b) the religious leaders, c) the crowds, and d) the disciples

The unclean spirits- They recognized Jesus for what he was, the Son of God The religious leaders- uh idk The crowds- uh idk The disciples- uh idk

Do the disciples understand what it means to be the messiah? Do they understand what it means to be a disciple? Provide evidence.

They understand messiah as the conquering king and not as a suffering servant. They don't understand what it means to be a disciple either because when Jesus says he'd going to die they just ask him which one of them is going to be his right hand man and they're always outsiders.

With exception of Mark 6:7, 12, how are the disciples portrayed? Why is this depiction ironic?

They're portrayed as people who don't understand Jesus and his teachings and it's ironic because as Jesus's disciples they should be the people who understand Jesus and what he says the most.

In 8:27-10:45, how does the Evangelist depict Jesus' suffering and sacrifice as examples for disciples to follow? Again, provide textual evidence to justify your response.

Through these chapters, Jesus makes it clear what he is about to endure. He constantly tells his disciples of his unfortunate future. He explains to them that the suffering will eventually change them into prospering. In Mark 8:35, Jesus says, " For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it."
