Biochemistry: Diffusion and Osmosis
What is Equilibriam?
When molecules are spread out equally
Examples of diffusion
-Food coloring in water -Perfum/cologne being sprayed in a room
Why is diffusian important in homeostasis?
It helps keep different elements in an organism balanced.
What is an Isotonic solution?
It is when both the cell and solution have an equal solute concentration. Ideal solution
How does osmosis relate to omeostasis?
It keeps the cell at an optimal "size". If not the cell could swell or shrink.
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration
What is osmosis?
The movement of water across a cell membrane to an area of high concentration to low concentration
What is the solute?
The part of a solution that is being dilluded by the solvent. Could be salt or another substance
What is a solvent?
The water in a solution that dillutes the solute
What is a Hypotonic solution?
When water moves into the cell and causes it to burst. Cell had lower solvent
What is a hypertonic solution?
When water moves out of the cell and causes it to shrink. Cell had higher solvent
