Back in 1858, the people running for president used most techniques that today's campaigning techniques are based on. During Abe's campaigning, he had campaign buttons with photographs of each candidate and his running mate. Along with that, campaigns still relied on tried and true ways to persuade voters, such as sheet music, and direct contact between voters and candidates. Compared to today's campaigning, there was way less equipment/tech that was vulnerable to "Hacking".

People were in favor of secession because it enabled that group of people to get away from some sort of abuse/problem that they had received/encountered. People were not in favor of secession because the people that want to leave may not be fully equipped/taught to survive on their own. When the south seceded from the US, the only state capable of seceding was Texas, since Texas was and could again be a state. The rest of the south would struggle to live without help from the north, and thus re-join the Union.
