a form of racism expressed in the practice of social and political institutions. An example of is the police department, jails and the school system.

Systematic Racism

a system that operates under Race and wealth. As referenced in one of the class lecture, Race and wealth are the twin towers of oppression. It's reinforced by social institutions. An example of this is that 40% of all black people are at or below poverty line. The school system is another example of this. Many of the low income black community school systems are low funded, over capacity with too many students in classrooms.

individual racism

reflects personal attitudes that are baised on stereotypes and personal beliefs. As stated in one of the class lectures this can be seen in two in forms covert and overt. An example is name calling, slurs, or denying someone a loan because they are black.

What is white privilege and how does it operate to keep blacks in their place?

the enhancement of opportunity and societal privilege of white people over other races and is measured by the value gap. As stated

What is intersectionality?

the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. As stated by Kimberlé Crenshaw who coined the term intersectionality " Similarly, if a black Woam is harmed because she is is an intersection, her injury could result from sex discrimination or race discrimination."

An example of covert is denying a person a loan or job based on the name on their application because they think it is a black person. An example of overt is using slurs or being a member of a racial hate group.

How has the United States criminilized blackness?

Anytime a black person in a situation they are automatically guilty because they are black.In Democracy in black when describing the case of Michael Brown, the news and police continously called him a thug, who smoked weed and listened to hip hop music. states "Police actions and community responses in Ferguson and elsewhere increasingly expose a painful reality:the United States remains a nation fundamentally shaped by it's racist past and present''

What's the difference between black on black crime and police brutality?

Black on Black crime is a term used by society to put blame on the black people of America for the violent conditions they live in based on the benefit of the white race. Police brutality is the abuse of authority with unwarranted infliction of excessive force and even death. An example of this is the case of Tamir Rice, 12 year old african american boy shot and killed by police officers because they thought he had a gun.

How does implicit bais effect decision making?

Implicit bais is a form of unintentional racism and judgement based on the things you've seen and learned and the idea that we all function on implicit bais. As we stated in our class lecture an example of this is when a black person in an elevator with a white person and they feel fearful but are more at ease around a white person. Another example is how quickly you corolate negative connotations with black anything.

Who's Trayvon Martin and why was the case important for the Black Lives Matter

Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old unarmed African American boy who fatally shot and killed by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. This case is important to the Black Lives Matter movement because as stated in "Where is Black Lives Matter Headed?" by Jelani Cobbs, The phrase "black lives matter" was born in July of 2013, in a Facebook post by Alicia Garza, called "a love letter to black people." The post was intended as an affirmation for a community distraught over George Zimmerman's acquittal in the shooting death of seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin. This also lead to the uproar in the black community that lead to the organization of protest and activism in America.

What does it mean to live in a colorblind society

As stated in Chapter 1 of "Racism without Racist" this became the dominant racial ideology as the mechanism and practices for keeping blacks and other racial minorities " at the bottom of the well" changed. instead of relying on name calling color blind racism otherizes softly ''these people are human too'' An example is viewing interracial marriage as a problem for things such as children, locations and the extra burden it places on the couple.

Value Gap

As stated in Democracy in Black.The value gap is the the idea that white people are valued more than others (specifically black people). An example is the black depression. After recession, the country in terms of white people were able to bounce back while many of the black people in America were not bale to do so. Also stated in a perevious class lecture the black person gets double the hardship of white person and half the benefit.

How did the Black Lives Matter Movement start?

As stated in Jelanie Cobbs article "Black Lives Matter" Following the death and case of Trayvon Martin Alica Garza had posted a tweet speaking on the issue where she states the importance of black lives and her friend Patrisse Cullors amended the last three words BlackLivesMatter into a hashtag. After Cullors created the Black Lives Matter hashtag, the two women began promoting it. Opal Tometi, a writer and an immigration-rights organizer in Brooklyn, whom Garza had met at a conference in 2012, offered to build a social-media platform, on Facebook and Twitter, where activists could connect with one another.Black Lives Matter didn't reach a wider public until the following summer, when a police officer named Darren Wilson shot and killed eighteen-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson.

How does the Black Lives Matter help to improve the lives of black women?

As stated on the BLM website "We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered."

Comparison of civil rights movement vs The black Lives matter

Black Lives Matter has been described as "not your grandfather's civil-rights movement," to distinguish its tactics and its philosophy from those of nineteen-sixties-style activism. The use of the internet has help with the spread of the message and the world being able to see what is going on in America.

How has the death of black people been justified with the protection of blue lives

Blue lives is just a "movement" built out of response to BLM movement. It is used to justify the killing of unarmed black men because the people who support blue lives say that they appeared dangerous or threatening and cops have to do whatever they can to get home at night. Got this from debate.

Why would anyone want to pass as white ?

They would want to experience white Privilege.

What does social construct of race mean?

Race is not biological or based on the genes of people. Race is used to categorize and discriminate and oppress others for the benefit of white supremacy. As stated in one of our lectures the way black people are viewed, labeled, judged or given opportunities is based on how light their skin is. For example when listing the more acceptable to the not acceptable after white people there is asians, hispanics, light skin, black and then dark skin.
