Where was the Rh antigen first discovered?

-in the blood of the rhesus monkey

Antibodies

-produced by immune system (lymphocytes)(WBCs) -*marks cells to be destroyed* -*keys*

Antigen

-protein on the surface of RBC -have specific shape -surface markers for the cell -*locks*

Which blood type is the universal receiver?

-type AB

Which blood type is the universal donor?

-type O-

Transfusions

-worry only about A, B, & Rh antigens -if incompatible the antigens will cause hemolysis of recipients to RBCs -(you don't want both the lock and the key)

Rh+ means...

-you have the antigen

If neither antigen is on RBCs of type O blood...

-you will have antibodies A & B in plasma -universal donor

If you have antigen B on RBCs of type b blood...

-you will have antibody A in plasma

If you have antigen A on RBCs of type A blood...

-you will have antibody B in plasma

If you have antigen A & B on RBCs of type AB blood...
