- Free Africans captured, brought to Cuba -given fake Spanish names to hide their African origins -53 Africans bought as slaves, boarded onto Spanish Slave Ship " La Amistad"

- US navy stops ships -Amistad captures are arrested, charged with murder and piracy - Brought to CT to stand trial -Northerners hire lawyers to defend slaves
