A short-range wireless technology used in devices such as hands-free systems.

Cookies

A small data file created by a web browser that remembers your preferences for a specific website.

Search engine

A sophisticated combination of hardware and software that stores the URL of millions of web pages and most of the content on those pages. When users type specific keywords into the search engine, they will receive an organized list of matching sites, images, and articles that contain those keywords.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A type of connection that increases the security of network communication by employing a method called "tunneling," whereby each packet from the sending computer is encapsulated within another packet.

Virus

A type of malware that is attached to a host file and has the ability to replicate, or copy, itself.

Worm

A type of malware that self-replicates and spreads through computers and networks without the need to attach to a host file.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

A type of memory that temporarily stores the data and programs that a computer is currently using.

Solid State Storage

A type of secondary storage device that uses electronic circuits to read and store data. It has no moving parts, making it faster and less likely to be damaged if dropped. Ex. USB flash drive, memory cards, flash memory or solid-state drives.

Open-Source License

A type of software license that permits the source code to be freely distributed and modified.

IP Address (Internet Protocol Address)

A unique set of numbers and/or letters that uniquely identifies every computer or device on the Internet.

Blogs

A web page or small website that contains a series of chronological posts and comments.

Privacy Policy

A website's written statement that clearly states what information is collected from users and what is done with that information.

NFC (Near Field Communication)

A wireless technology that lets your mobile device communicate over very short distances, such as when paying for goods on wireless payment devices.

Piracy

Acquiring or exchanging copies of protected digital creations without payment to or permission from their creator.

Biotechnology

An application of biology that uses living organisms to manufacture new products or improve existing ones.

Accounting Software

An application program that helps business owners manage their finances more efficiently by providing tools for tracking accounting transactions such as sales, accounts receivable, inventory purchases, and accounts payable. Ex. Intuit Quickbooks, Sage 50 Accounting, Xero (cloud based)

Fair Use

An exception to copyright law that provides for a limited set of circumstances where others can use copyrighted material without first obtaining permission.

Virtual reality

An experience where humans can interact with realistic environments that are simulated by computers.

Augmented reality

An experience where the real-world is supplemented with computer-generated information.

An organized method for storing information.

Android/iOS

Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open-source software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Apple's proprietary operating system for its mobile devices, including iPhones, iPods, and iPads.

Freeware License

Any software that is free to use without any specified time restrictions.

Email

CC - Stands for "carbon copy" and is used to send a copy of your message to individuals other than your primary recipient. BCC - Stands for "blind carbon copy," and is used to send a copy of an email to recipients who will remain invisible to other recipients of the message.

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Involves the development of intelligent systems or machines that possess capabilities such as learning, problem solving, and communication.

Employee monitoring

Involves the use of computers, mobile devices, or cameras to observe, record, and review an employee's use of a technology, including communications such as email messages, keyboard activity (used to measure productivity), and websites visited

LAN/WAN

Local Area Network - A data communication system consisting of multiple devices that are relatively near each other and are connected using cables or wireless media. Wide Area Network - The connection of two or more central computers or LANs, generally across a wide geographical area.

Phishing

Luring individuals into entering personal information into a website controlled by a hacker.

Spyware

Malware that reports activity on your computer to another party.

Software

One or more computer programs that are packaged together for a unified purpose.

Web Browser

Software that helps you find and retrieve a web page that you are interested in viewing.

PIM Software

Software that is designed to keep individuals organized via the management of contacts, appointments, to-do lists, and email.

Shareware License

Software that is free to download and install, but will stop working after a trial period unless the user purchases the software.

Operating systems (OS)

Software that manages the flow of data between hardware components and allows the user to communicate with the computer.

Word Processing Software

Software that provides tools for creating, editing, and formatting all kinds of text-based documents.

Spreadsheet Software

Software used for entering, calculating, and analyzing sets of numbers. This software is also used for creating charts.

Storage

The ability of a computer to hold or remember the information it processes.

Processing

The ability of a computer to perform actions based on instructions from the user or a program.

Cloud computing

The ability to store your files and use various applications in an online account.

Cloud storage

The ability to store your files online and access them from any Internet-connected device. Ex. dropbox, google drive, microsoft one drive, apple icloud

Whistleblowing

The act of alerting the public about harmful activities that are being hidden by an organization.

Network bandwidth

The amount of data that can be transferred on a network during a specific interval; usually measured in bits per second.

Nanotechnology

The creation or manipulation of matter at the smallest possible scale.

Internet

The largest network in the world, it connects billions of people and organizations throughout the planet.

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

The main processor of a computer. It is responsible for organizing and carrying out instructions to produce a desired output.

Biometrics

The measurement of patterns or characteristics found in the human body.

Wi-Fi

The most popular standard for wireless networking; also called "802.11."

The physical devices that make up a computer system.

Domain name

The portion of a URL that uniquely identifies a site and a brand on the web.

Hard drive

The primary storage device of a personal computer.

Compression

The process of making a file smaller than its original size.

Encryption

The process of scrambling your data or storage devices to make them unreadable by anyone who doesn't have the proper key.

Output

The processed results that a computer sends to you.

Automation

The use of computers or machines to perform the work that was once done by a human.

Unix/Linux

UNIX operating system: Servers on the Web, Mainframe computers, Personal Computers LINUX - version of UNIX: Alternative to windows, Open source, Google Chrome OS based on Linux (Focuses on Internet connectivity and cloud computing)
