A radiographic image that would show both lungs would need to be in what plane?

A transverse or frontal plane

Which of the following best describes a sagittal plane?

A vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts

Serous membranes line the cavity walls and the surfaces of the organs that are contained within which of the following cavities?

Abdominopelvic cavity

Which of the following statements with regards to regional terms is correct?

Acromial and brachial are in the upper limb.

Which of the following statements with regards to regional terms is correct?

In anatomical position, palmar is anterior. The term pollex refers to the thumb and digital refers to fingers. Mental refers to the chin area. Peroneal refers to the fibular region while perineal refers to the anus and external genitalia. Coxal refers to the hip portion of the lower limb. The pelvic region refers to the area below the abdominal region.

Which of the following is correctly matched?

Inferior is sometimes referred to as caudal.

Match the following: The abdominal regions that are directly lateral to the pubic (hypogastric) region

Inguinal (iliac) regions The abdominal regions that are directly lateral to the pubic (hypogastric) region are the right and left inguinal (iliac) regions. Lateral to the epigastric region are the right and left hypochondriac regions. Lateral to the umbilical region is the right and left lateral (lumbar) regions.

Which of the following pairings with regards to regional terms is correct?

Inguinal is the more medically accurate term for groin.

Match the following: The abdominal regions that are located immediately left or right of the umbilical region

Lateral (lumbar) regions

Which group of regional terms ONLY contains anterior body areas?

Mammary, crural, palmar, and antecubital

Which of the following statements with regards to regional terms is correct?

Olecranal is appendicular. The two fundamental divisions of our body are its axial and appendicular parts. The axial part, which makes up the main axis of our body, includes the head, neck, and trunk. The appendicular part consists of the appendages, or limbs, which are attached to the body's axis. Otic (ear) and cervical (neck) are in the axial region. Crural (leg), olecranal (elbow) and hallux (toe) are appendicular.

Which of the following statements with regards to regional terms is correct?

Sural refers to the calf.

Which usage of a directional term is correct?

The arms are lateral to the chest.

Which of the following is true?

The elbow is proximal to the wrist.

Which of the following directional terms is accurate?

The heart is medial to the lungs.

Which of the following statements is true?

The pollex is distal to the antebrachial region.

Which of the following statements with regards to regional terms is correct?

The term digital can pertain to both the pedal and manus. The term digital pertains to both the pedal (foot) and manus (hand) regions. Calcaneal refers to the heel while the tarsal refers to the ankle. The most superior region is the cephalic. Moving inferiorly, cervical would be the next region of those stated, followed by lumbar and sacral.

The ventral body cavity is subdivided into which of the following sets of cavities?

The thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities

Which cavity contains the spinal cord?

Vertebral cavity contains the spinal cord. The dorsal body cavity, which protects the fragile nervous system organs, has two subdivisions (See figure below, gold areas). The cranial cavity, in the skull, encases the brain. The vertebral, or spinal, cavity, which runs within the bony vertebral column, encloses the delicate spinal cord. The abdominal cavity contains the digestive viscera. The thoracic cavity contains the heart and lungs. The pelvic cavity contains the urinary bladder, reproductive organs and rectum.

The body cavity that houses a lung is known as the __________.

pleural cavity

If you know that the appendix lies in the right lower part of the trunk, you could also say it lies in the __________.

right inguinal (iliac) region

A person with appendicitis will most often present pain in the __________.

right lower quadrant A person with appendicitis will most often present pain in the right lower quadrant. The appendix is a small worm-shaped extension off of the the first portion of the large intestine.

Anatomical position is characterized by ________.

the pollex as the most lateral feature

All of the following are correct positioning when placing the body in the anatomical position, except when __________.

the thumbs are pointing medially

Why are directional terms so important?

Because they allow us to explain where one body structure is in relation to another. For example, we could describe the relationship between the ears and the nose by stating, "The ears are located on each side of the head to the right and left of the nose." Using anatomical terminology, this becomes "The ears are lateral to the nose." Using anatomical terms saves words and is less ambiguous. Commonly used orientation and directional terms are defined and illustrated in Table 1.1. Many of these terms are also used in everyday conversation, but remember as you study them that their anatomical meanings are very precise.

Which serous membrane layer is closest to the surface of the heart?

Visceral pericardium

A section that will allow you to look at the superior surface of the liver would be considered ________.

transverse A section that will allow you to look at the superior surface of the liver would be considered transverse. A transverse section will divide the body into superior and inferior portions. A sagittal section divides left into right while a frontal section divides anterior and posterior. An oblique section are cuts that are made diagonally between the horizontal and vertical planes.
